This is on Bidamount list.
Hmmm… not sure, but I would not put my hand on the fire for it being really 18th century.

I see what you mean, Giovanni. The overall design seems a bit crowded, the Kangxi elegance is missing. Kangxi revival or modern fake?
Birgit
yes , I agree about the 'busy' central scene , and to me the child's head looks very deformed , and the free arm of the elder is oddly drawn. More likely to be a modern piece rather than C19th ?
tam
Dear Shinigami and Tam, you have just spotted the same things that were dubious to me.
I believe that the too much crowd scene is pointing toward a recent copy and not a 19th century revival.
The style of the figures too is completely missing the Kangxi character.
Giovanni
Granted, some aspects of this seem unusual, but on balance, it looks alright to me as being a candidate for eighteenth-century production. I would want to handle in physically before arriving at a firmer verdict, however, and I would not be likely to enjoy that advantage unless I were to buy it, which I do not intend to do.
I also note that the seller's list in general appears to be reliable, make what you will of that.
Alan
Dear Alan,
I did not check the reliability of the seller. He may be in bona fide, as I suppose that Peter may have had a quick look to it and din't examined it carefully.
In my opinion, more I look at it and less I accept it as genuine Kangxi. The whole lower part of the main scene, i.e the two figures, the border of the garden etc are really off.
The rope of the figures, the overall bodies, all that is off to me.
And I do not remember of having seen that decoration on the outer border.
What are off too are those non sense grass on the lingzhi at the base, excess of overdecoration. And the sand grits on the foot, never seen on Kangxi plates to me.
Giovanni
Dear Giovanni,
The grit on the foot is a concern, yes. However, without examining the feel of the ceramic paste, the light refraction from the glaze surface, and the bubble morphology of the glaze itself, especially at the junctures with the underglaze cobalt, I would still not condemn this item too hastily.
As with any major auction house, so on eBay, although unfortunately on eBay it is seldom possible - decisions from photographs need often to be preliminary, not decisive. I feel this may be a case in point, notwithstanding your reservations on style. Moreover, the seller, whose integrity I have no reason to doubt, appears to be a fair dealer. I have noted his offerings not only here, but also in the past. He has a good track record in feedback, and I feel that if any previous customer of his had felt deceived, they would have registered the fact.
Alan
Dear Alan,
thank you but we have different opinions on this. I am not questioning the seller, he may be in perfect bona fide as said before.
The main worrying point is that the whole garden and the figures inside it are off to me.
Giovanni
I looked at the linked plate and let out a lol - this plate looks terrible. 18th Century?! Really - Everyone in the factory must have had a really bad hangover that day. Maybe first day back after the New Year? Surely it's just a really poor replica. - I would love to hear Peter's justification why this is in the newsletter. - This plate is nearly as bad as the vase I posted - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Estate-Old-House-Chinese-Antique-Porcelain-Vase-Blue-Kangxi-Marked-Asian-China/283095680270?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
My idea is, it could be a Kangxi piece copying Ming Jiajing or Wanli style. In Kangxi era a lot of Jiajing and Wanli porcelains are copied by Jingdezhen.

Xin_FAWIS I take your point... I suppose it could be ? - Finishes today and lots of people are following and bidding, I'll be interested to see how high it sells.
Already 33 bids, incredible. To me it is not Kangxi, nor Kangxi copying a previous period. To me it is recent, trying to copy Kangxi.
Those figures and the garden ground are really off.
Giovanni.
Whatever it is, I find it rather ugly and wouldn’t bid for it.
Birgit
820 US$, incredible. It is the same old story, some dealers with many feedback can sell at high prices things that are not worth it, regardless if has been listed wrongly in bona fide or not.
There are two other details that tells me that it is a modern replica.
Giovanni
You mention two other details. May I guess? 1. the very smooth surface, looks a bit like my muesli bowl. 2. the unusual form, the two edges between foot and rim being too sharp.
Of course I could be completely wrong but I just try my luck.
Birgit
