@nyccat So, I do love Shin Hanga prints, and what is nice is that there are some great resources available for free online.
First, the print color on the front does not necessarily reflect that it is a 2nd edition. Frequently, prints are hung in front of direct light, and they fade.
In the case of your Koitsu print, the best method is to look at the publisher and carver seals in the margin, and to examine the back.
The publisher is the Doi Company, and the seal is for Doi Hangaten (the owner at the time of publishing).
The second set of seals is for the carver Harada-Yokoi.
I know I sound super smart right now, but all I did was recognize that it was the Doi publishing company, and looked it up here ( http://shinhanga.net/doiseals.htm).
Now, you are probably correct that this is a later print, but not because of the colors on the front, but because Doi did reproduce their prints A LOT, so the value of Doi prints versus the more desirable Watanabe published prints is evident in the auction results. And, there is a lack of faith in Doi for perhaps using old publishing seals in modern reprints.
What does the back of the print look like? If you look at the photos posted of the Hasui print that shows the front and back, you can see the deep penetration of ink and the streaks....those streaks are caused by the artist pushing wooden tools on the back of the washi paper to get the ink to penetrate.
The process of making the print IS PART OF THE ART, NOT just the image on the front. This is also why first edition woodblock prints are so much more valuable....they generally were more carefully colored.
@greeno107 hi, my conviction is more from the Koitsu website where they documented 3 different versions of the print. And it was also featured in one of David Bull's videos.
And I believe in the video, David's version is from the 1980s. But regardless of what year it was made. I know mine is not the original. I love the scene. And I know even for a brand new print with that many colors to be made in Japan today, it's about the same price that I paid for it. 🙂 so really no loss for me in that situation there.
for now, I have decided not to destroy the nice frame that it is already in. I know that maybe someone would take it out. But since it came in a frame, I decided to leave it the way it is. Until I decide to part with it...
your first print might be 30s to maybe early 50s, many 50s and 60s prints didn't have the seals. This is the first edition seal but the print is a little faded, the color is Very Good but not excellent. It may have been in a frame for some time but can't be completely sure.
Hello,AngP
Nice print, if you are going to keep in this frame you need to make sure
it has acid proof matting and backing. John
