This is a sad story of a buyer who's suspicion and tight budget caused him to hesitate and lose an auction.
You may recall a couple of months back the Canadian seller who had the combo western & Chinese scened vase Peter gushed about? Well, they also had this vase for auction and listed it as 19th c. I was so afraid it was fake I hesitated and lost the auction and have since then been searching in vain for something like it: large, blue and white, crisp detail, with landscapes, this shape, etc. I don't need the precious objects, but would like something to match my 18th c. blue and white export "pagoda" plates.
Have you ever seen anything like it? Is it at all common or rare? Is there a chance I might come across something similar again? I shall take solace... Obviously it wasn't the vase for me and I hope someday I'll find something I love even more.
Sorry I didn't save more photos; it's now gone from my "recently viewed" Ebay memory and I can't locate it.

Like I said, I was racked with suspicion. I'm still a novice and have learned to be overly-cautious to the point of undermining myself, as you see here.
He hasn't had any items since that auction.
No he has nothing for sale at the moment. I am not 100% sure but I think he does listings every three or months.
I got this from him. It's a superb jade carving from the late Ming period to early Qing period. So 17th carving. Perhaps early 18th century
A pair of mandarin ducks on a lotus leaf. Great carving! Nice celedon colour with russet features particularly on the base. Highly collectable among jade collectors.
I play with it every day!

Hope you don’t mind me saying, in some ways I enjoyed reading this (though of course I wish you got the piece!)
We always love to see nice pieces others grabbed; but those “down moments” are just as important in our journey, and are important to share!
I think most here can at one point or another relate to “too cautious, too budgeted” - and missing out..
Those missed opportunities that nag us in hindsight are equally spurring for staying ever vigilant as collectors & seekers of art that impacts us - even gives a little extra “fire” to keep our search going onward, gaining experience & knowledge as we move forward.
With any luck, it gives us even more sentiment and validation when we later come across something we’re finally ready to take a chance on that ends up paying off - and giving us a story to add to our treasure gained; with even more meaning.
Wishing you success and satisfaction in the future with your quest: and we’ll be here to applaud you when that moment arrives.

I share your agony. I only had your listing readily available because this eBay seller had a vase that I fell in love with but went beyond what I thought it was worth:
I think about it often, hoping I'll come across another, and kick myself for hesitating on it, too. I echo everything JRN said, and hope that these missed opportunities inspire us to continue our search for our "grail."

I agree that not getting desired items can help to make collecting more interesting, keeping me motivated. If I had won the auction, I'd be finished searching for a vase (at least in my current apartment). Now, I have something to search for because Lord knows I don't need any more plates. 😜
A tureen would be fun to own someday, too.
Speaking of someday, I hope to make it to Gloucester MA and pop into Peter's store to see what treasures are for sale (I'm assuming his brick-and-morter store is still in operation). Who knows? Maybe he'll have my future vase that I'll love?
