Hi Ron
Thank you for posting more of your collection.

The above four items are all modern IMO. That's to say second half of the 20th century.
View based on carving style and technique.

Thanks. I didn’t think they were antiques. I just liked the carvings. Out of curiosity, how can you tell?
Mark,
Jade Guan Yin for S$688 https://sg.carousell.com/p/224742113
what is your opinion? This seller contacted me around a month ago, but I kept telling him that I’m not interested.
Ron
What a huge collection. You started with a bang! I do not know anything about Jade, but if they are all real Jade then there some lovely pieces there.
Hi Ron,
The so-called vintage statue is actually quite modern. Seller does not claim it is vintage, but has it listed under vintage.
The quality of the carving is average along with colour/russet features.
The price he is asking, if it is natural jade is about market value.
I am unable to determine if said is natural untreated jade or other from the pictures only. I am always suspect when listing are vague in descriptions.
I note that seller has not shown the base, nor has stated the weight.
Mark
If you are buying modern jade because you like it and it gives you pleasure, then by all means buy it.
If on the other hand you are buying for investment/resell in the future etc. Then one should avoid modern and try for 19/20th century or earlier.
The first picture you posted of your collection (from memory) being a white lidded vessel is actually a well carved item and a desirable colour.
Modern Jade lacks the finer details one would find on genuine antique pieces. Especially the face, eyes and hands. The carving of said and polish are not done with skill and often finished in haste!
After you view and touch hundreds/thousands of items you will get a skilled feel. It is by trial and error that we all learn. This applies not just to jade but all types of collecting. When I first joined this forum I had no idea about porcelain, but thanks to members I have a reasonable understanding of said. That's after spending 35 hours a week viewing, reading and touching said for last year and a half.
Views on jade is very subjective. There is an old saying amongst collector's. You can show 5 collector's an item and will get 10 different views.
If you want to continue buying jade especially from websites like the one you posted then you should insist on a certificate from a recognized gemologist and not those with dodgy certificates you often see.
Buying/collecting jade is a wonderful experience that will give you many years of pleasure.
Finally, it is estimated that more than 95% jade currently on offer around the world is either fake or has been treated.
Sorry I couldn't finish in my last post. Something came up while posting.

HI Mark,
There aren't many classification options on this particular website so quite often you have to choose Vintage or antique even though what is being sold isn't necessarily either one. I often ignore this. I usually buy furniture on this website, often from expats who bought lovely Asian furniture, but don't want to take it back with them when they move back home.
this particular carving popped up on my feed that's why I figured I would ask you. I wasn't interested in buying, but wanted to understand more about what to look out for when buying jade. thanks.

Mark,
thanks for your input. Reading up on jade is great and I'm learning a lot, but nothing beats asking someone who's been collecting for years. I hope you don't mind me asking.
Ron

My wife says I am going through a mid-life crisis. I told her it's cheaper than having a girlfriend on the side. Anyway, I honestly didn't pay that much. In fact, one lot I bought belonged to one of the wealthiest Singaporeans and they were going through a much-publicized ugly divorce. The wife, who caught her husband cheating contacted a local auctioneer and sent not only all of his jade collection, but all of his watches, paintings etc... all in all, they auctioned off around 400 items. What I bought was most of the jade and stone collection at pennies on the dollar, because the auctioneer was sitting with the collection for over a year it was obviously an impulse buy.
Hi Ron,
No I don't mind you asking questions and other. Happy to help if I am able.
At least your collection now has provenance.
Out of interest, the white elaborate carved lidded vessel that was the first item you posted. What price did you pay, if you don't mind me asking?

HI Mark,
I believe I paid around SGD$500 for this so around USD $360.
I'm actually curious as to how much something like this would cost in the open market.
Ron
Hi Ron,
The price you paid is actually cheap IMO.
When you ask 'in the open market' I assume by way of auction.
Although said is not antique, it is still a very nice carving along with the colour etc.
If I saw something like this in an auction I would expect the estimate to be SGD $1500-2000.
If you wanted to buy said from a retail carver/store the price would be higher.
Of course I am assuming that it is not damaged (without cracks or chips) and that it measures about 8" in height.
Mark
Mark,
Yes, I figured that at worse I can get what I paid for. Yes, I meant open market by way of auction. The other items I bought as part of this lot of Jade, were cheaper.
Ron
