Hi Greeno -
For comparison:-
Attached images of a small jarlet, H. 4.5cm, Body D. 7cm, Base D 3.8cm, from my collection. This piece, as with all similar wares, has been made from two pieces, moulded together horizontally. The join can be seen/felt on both the exterior/interior body.
Image 4 clearly shows two small unglazed areas where the piece was held when dipped into the glaze ...
Such small jars were produced for export to the Philippines, Indonesia and South East Asia, where they were extremely popular, and numerous examples have been uncovered from burial sites throughout these areas ...
Also attached reference/images of the differing shapes/decoration used on such pieces recovered from the Lena Shoal junk, which is dated to Hongzhi period, so late 15thC, 1490’s ...
Stuart
@ming1449 Thank you! Admittedly, I see some differences, but I’d be hard pressed to say definitively what period each of these jars are from (yours, mine, and the Lena Shoal). I just don’t have knowledge as to what the differentiating elements are.
Is it the density of the decor, shape of the jarlet, color,....?
This is bird watching 101, for sure!
Hi Greeno -
It is primarily to do with painting style, motif composition and combinations of such and, to a slightly lesser extent, cobalt tones ...
Then secondly shapes, the proportions of such, and glaze tones ...
However there are always exceptions, and one must always allow for some ‘overlapping’ between differing reigns and indeed periods ...
This is especially so regarded pieces produced in the minyao, or private, kilns. If a motif, design combinations or shape proved commercially popular, it could continue to be used for several decades, with little alteration ...
’Bird watching’ indeed!!🤔😉😂...
Stuart
Sorry to chime in like this but I have a small jar that looks rather similar to some of the above shown. I bought it in a mixed lot of Vietnamese ceramics from Edmund Grundner and have always thought it doesn't really fit in with the other Vietnamese things. Could this also be Chinese? It's an underwater find from South East Asia.
Birgit
Hi Greeno -
I forgot to add that body characteristics, methods of potting and finish are also important factors to consider ...
Hi Birgit -
No apologies needed, please 'chime in' whenever ..!!
From the images, this certainly appears Chinese to me. The painting style would indicate an early 16th C date, probably Zhenge. Note the lotus panel motif surrounding the base is close to that on the similar shape jar from the Lena Shoal junk - image 2 above ...
I know very little regarding Vietnamese wares, but the pieces I have seen at auction and in publications display rather a distinctive painting style - quite different then that seen on your jarlet - but just my thoughts ...
Perhaps others may wish to comment on this ...?!
Stuart
I agree, Edmund Grunder is a nice person to deal with. Easy to communicate with.
I have also purchased objects from him and he admits if he is not sure about certain criteria of his items.
(not sure anymore but I think he mentioned that his specialty is blue and white Ming ware)
It makes me smile. Always a good thing.
@nmh Beautiful piece, Michael! Very interesting recessed foot, too.
@Greeno107, I collect these small Ming jarlets and would love to discuss your generous offer! Please email me at [email protected]. Many thanks!
@craig Sure! I’ll see what I’ve got and take a group shot and just let me know what might fit for your collection.
What I would ask is that you only take what you need for your collection, not for reselling. I use them for gifts and such, so while I’m not personally attached, I do value them.
Give me a couple of days.
@greeno107 Thanks! Take your time. 🙂
And I will happily adhere to your Terms & Conditions. Each of the ten or so jarlets I have has gone immediately to the "Never Sell" category of my collection. I do have some duplicates though that I'd be happy to trade. I'll send you the family photo.
@craig So, I took a quick look and found most of my little jars are monochrome, believed to be Song/Yuan, but I did find one more blue & white along with the one from my original post.
I’ve got lots of this kind of thing still in boxes, so I’m not sure if I’ve just misplaced the other jars, or if they’ve been dispersed already. I’ll check again next week.
Meantime, here is a group shot that includes some bowls. I found a lot of. Owls, but mostly poorly decorated, so I only included a few in the photo.
If anything interests you, email me with the ones you like circled. We’ll work out the shipping by email.
Best,
Greeno.

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink.
