Hi Mark ,
it's a very fine piece, but I can't enlarge your pictures. Maybe you try to upload them again.
Chris
Hi Mark -
A very beautiful piece ...
Attached images of two dragon/cloud plaques also carved from white, Hetian jade, part of an 18 piece jade belt which I saw exhibited at the 2015 British Museum ‘Ming’ Exhibition. The craftsmanship is exquisite ...
It was part of the burial furnishings from the tomb of Prince Zhuang of Liang, 1411 - 1441, grandson of the Yongle emperor, ninth son of the Hongxi emperor and brother of the Xuande emperor, and his wife Lady Wei. When excavated in 2001/2, the archaeologists recovered 5,100, including 120 good objects and 7 complete jade belts ...
Stuart
Apologises, tried to enlarged small images from a book - not the best quality ...!!
Stuart
A fine and beautifully executed example posted by Stuart. Thank you for sharing.
Plaques, especially those from said period/later featuring dragon amongst clouds chasing a flaming pearl are very sought after by collector's. The skill in rendering is superb/skillful.
Auction prices of late have been a little soft on plaques especially from this period. Excluding dragon plaques, which are always in high demand.
Chris I have provided a link under 'a fine....' Originally posted by Xin from whom I just purchased said plaque. I hope you can enlarge/examine in more detail etc.

Must be Marchance Auctions 16308B, 28/11/2016, 'equisite chinese jade carvings from Tang to Qing dynasty', HK Lot # 1525 - not " Marchant Auctions". https://www.marchance-auctioneers.com/en/past/detail/6796 I was about to comment that such plaques are often seen inserted in old boxes before 'ebay exposer' wisely told us that antique jade plaques are never inserted into old boxes. Take for example this related example that might also be of the same period. https://www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/Chinese-jade-inlaid-jewelry-box_06C4DF3BAE?fbclid=IwAR3QhT0vAmW1g9i1k0I3g2uf0pHx6fubX2Xmnr4mvteloOhztvCAZ7yeNjM A Ming dynasty example that compares in overall composition sold at Christie's also has the same strange toothed beak https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-well-carved-opaque-ivory-colored-jade-oval-plaque-5658878-details.aspx?fbclid=IwAR1GUI4vs2JlrRp1-DQh0tUDoo-la7pHTgH79krH44sCHChOwAzIIoVayvg And finally there is a related example at the National Palace Museum where it is described as a 'belt plaque'. https://www.comuseum.com/jade/sui-to-yuan/#
Hi avatar,
Yes you are correct. That is the plaque I was referring to. Quite stunning example IMO along with a high estimate. Very similar to the one I purchased.
The open mouth egret was primarily carved during the later Ming period. Versus the closed found during the Yuan period. Although I have seen examples from respected dealers that differ to that assumption/thought.
The plaque inserted into the box that you posted from an auction is IMO very modern and unlikely to be jade etc.
There are some very fine high quality jade plaques that were made/inserted into boxes. Take for instance the silversmith Farmer (USA) who regularly purchased purchased jade and remodeled said into boxes using silver/other back in the early 20th century. There was also a Japanese artist/retailer whose name escapes me atm. So high quality boxes with high quality jade plaques/other were made during the early 20th Century. Not the cheap boxes using cheap mass produced wood and leather as indicated by eBay exposer.
There is a stunning plaque available through respected dealer JJ Lally. Depicting from memory a dragon.

Soory, my mistake. I was aware the box (and jade) I linked to was possibly replica. I was triggered by the similarities with another jade plaque sold at the same auction, remembered that I had seen a comparable example inserted in a box, relocated it, researched it, got exited and posted before I had checked more carefully. There are many very similar boxes in the same kind of wood with brass and inlaid jade plaques that can be seen online. https://www.marchance-auctioneers.com/en/past/detail/6679 https://www.google.com/search?q=jewelry+box+jade&tbm=isch&tbs=rimg:CXHJG-G7gBWLImABVfFGCVjVP0fIRD-SfpHO0D7oRm14Fjc2sPY-ahVf_1HZxQgdPXnt2TUtCuKkmHBAxlSIq6cM9QpHUYTrtgHrq_1b8MlfnbaXB1ipu35ithMvGliwwpIRsSWsouQ7m223cqEgkBVfFGCVjVPxEjCK8HcGeRzSoSCUfIRD-SfpHOERAwVx7TgU8eKhIJ0D7oRm14FjcRjLBvpjIVWjwqEgk2sPY-ahVf_1BFnumv50ZwGGCoSCXZxQgdPXnt2ERi0gLw5wNM4KhIJTUtCuKkmHBARX1pbkeJBoiQqEgkxlSIq6cM9QhHwgMfhxzZdECoSCZHUYTrtgHrqEY1y7WLJrR0PKhIJ_1b8MlfnbaXARGK-m4RR4bhAqEgl1ipu35ithMhGd_1sADHYT3oSoSCfGliwwpIRsSEZSLx8b1QXJuKhIJWsouQ7m223cRquf5v6Id76M&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj15dCtjv3kAhVplIsKHRoEAq4QuIIBegQIARAw&biw=1034&bih=871&dpr=1
As I am currently using a phone I am unable to download images from Google search etc.
If you type 'Edward I Farmer silversmith' you will see the type of jade plaque inserts I was alluding to in my post. The quality of Farmer's boxes are stunning and very sought after as illustrated by their high prices.
Hence the onslaught of low quality mass produced rubbish one see's being offered by third-tier auction houses, eBay and other unscrupulous outlets!

There are some relateted (Qing dynasty?) jade plaques on eBay right now ending in just a few hours. I'm not going to bid on them since they are probably gonna go pretty high. I particulary like this one - seems Khotan jade, almost mutton fat quality, with the russet inclusion skillfully used to highlight the carving. The backside seems a little crude but I guess it's suppossed to be like that? https://www.ebay.com/itm/A-FINELY-CARVED-ANTIQUE-CHINESE-PALE-RUSSET-JADE-PLAQUE/362775854830?hash=item5477203eee:g:oTQAAOSw6IJdm9Tu This one also seems a little crude but the material is whiter in tone. https://www.ebay.com/itm/A-WELL-CARVED-ANTIQUE-CHINESE-WHITE-JADE-AND-ENAMEL-SILVER-PENDANT/333353490803?hash=item4d9d6a9973:g:mAAAAOSw3yNdm9Wj And this one could possibly be an authentic Ming dynasty jade carp? https://www.ebay.com/itm/A-LARGE-EXCELLENT-ANTIQUE-CHINESE-CELADON-JADE-CARVING-OF-FISH-WITH-STAND/333353485601?hash=item4d9d6a8521:g:hMoAAOSwSgFdm9Q9
The first plaque looks OK and could date from the late Qing period. I tried to zoom in but said blurred. I was however, concerned with the spotty russett effect that can indicate treatment etc.
The fish is imo modern. The carving looks like modern drilling with crude offshoots. The openwork has been roughly carved/drilled with haste. Just have a closer look at the tail end. Overall a very poor/terrible example.
I was amazed that it sold for US$2500!
I was also surprised the fish sold for for that much but I'm not sure if I agree it's modern. The engraved lines especially on the tail does look a little crude but the engraved lines in this Ming fish at Christie's also looks crude. https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-yellow-jade-fish-form-pendant-ming-dynasty-5805424-details.aspx My own impression is that jade carvings from periods can show enormeous variation in the quality of the workmanship, from pieces that can range from extremely fine to pieces that looks like rubbish.
But interestingly there is jade fish in a similar material dated to the Qianlong period in a museum.
I did find an example of a Qing dynasty plaque with a similar spotty russet effect at Christie's. That was the reason why I suggested the eBay plaque would also be of the Qing dynasty. I might actually more likely be Ming dynasty given the style? https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-finely-carved-white-and-russet-jade-5823686-details.aspx
Here are a couple of late Ming or early Qing belt plaques that has the same roughly carved openwork, etc. as the jade fish. They almost look like rubbish but I suppose they liked them like that. https://www.alamy.com/buckle-plaque-in-the-form-of-a-scholar-on-a-horse-english-china-chinese-late-ming-or-early-qing-dynasty-about-1550-1700-costumes-accessories-abraded-jade-overall-2-18-x-2-58-x-18-in-54-x-667-x-32-cm-a-2-18-x-1-58-x-18-in-54-x-413-x-32-cm-b-2-18-x-1-12-x-18-in-54-x-381-x-32-cm-gift-of-patricia-g-cohan-m200117924a-b-chinese-art-between-circa-1550-and-circa-1700-date-qsp5711500-00-00t000000z6p13191550-00-00t000000z9p13261700-00-00t000000z9p1480q5727902-image256938541.html?pv=1&stamp=2&imageid=4D80CF51-A9FC-481D-B42D-48D3CBDB94AC&p=786358&n=110&orientation=0&pn=1&searchtype=0&IsFromSearch=1&srch=foo%3Dbar%26st%3D0%26sortby%3D2%26qt%3Dearly%2520dynasty%25204%25205%26qt_raw%3Dearly%2520dynasty%25204%25205%26qn%3D%26lic%3D3%26edrf%3D0%26mr%3D0%26pr%3D0%26aoa%3D1%26creative%3D%26videos%3D%26nu%3D%26ccc%3D%26bespoke%3D%26apalib%3D%26ag%3D0%26hc%3D0%26et%3D0x000000000000000000000%26vp%3D0%26loc%3D0%26ot%3D0%26imgt%3D0%26dtfr%3D%26dtto%3D%26size%3D0xFF%26blackwhite%3D%26cutout%3D%26archive%3D1%26name%3D%26groupid%3D%26pseudoid%3D%26userid%3D%26id%3D%26a%3D%26xstx%3D0%26cbstore%3D0%26resultview%3DsortbyPopular%26lightbox%3D%26gname%3D%26gtype%3D%26apalic%3D%26tbar%3D1%26pc%3D%26simid%3D%26cap%3D1%26customgeoip%3D%26vd%3D0%26cid%3D%26pe%3D%26so%3D%26lb%3D%26pl%3D0%26plno%3D%26fi%3D0%26langcode%3Den%26upl%3D0%26cufr%3D%26cuto%3D%26howler%3D%26cvrem%3D0%26cvtype%3D0%26cvloc%3D0%26cl%3D0%26upfr%3D%26upto%3D%26primcat%3D%26seccat%3D%26cvcategory%3D*%26restriction%3D%26random%3D%26ispremium%3D1%26flip%3D0%26contributorqt%3D%26plgalleryno%3D%26plpublic%3D0%26viewaspublic%3D0%26isplcurate%3D0%26imageurl%3D%26saveQry%3D%26editorial%3D1%26t%3D0%26edoptin%3D https://www.alamy.com/buckle-plaque-in-the-form-of-two-boys-with-lotus-lian-and-box-he-english-china-chinese-late-ming-or-early-qing-dynasty-about-1550-1700-costumes-accessories-abraded-jade-overall-2-14-x-2-34-x-18-in-572-x-7-x-32-cm-a-2-14-x-1-34-x-18-in-572-x-445-x-32-cm-b-2-14-x-1-58-x-18-in-572-x-413-x-32-cm-gift-of-patricia-g-cohan-m200117925a-b-chinese-art-between-circa-1550-and-circa-1700-date-qsp5711500-00-00t000000z6p13191550-00-00t000000z9p13261700-00-00t000000z9p1480q5727902-image256938620.html?pv=1&stamp=2&imageid=119615EE-0C87-4BED-A3CC-3D0FC82D6676&p=786358&n=121&orientation=0&pn=1&searchtype=0&IsFromSearch=1&srch=foo%3Dbar%26st%3D0%26sortby%3D2%26qt%3Dearly%2520dynasty%25204%25205%26qt_raw%3Dearly%2520dynasty%25204%25205%26qn%3D%26lic%3D3%26edrf%3D0%26mr%3D0%26pr%3D0%26aoa%3D1%26creative%3D%26videos%3D%26nu%3D%26ccc%3D%26bespoke%3D%26apalib%3D%26ag%3D0%26hc%3D0%26et%3D0x000000000000000000000%26vp%3D0%26loc%3D0%26ot%3D0%26imgt%3D0%26dtfr%3D%26dtto%3D%26size%3D0xFF%26blackwhite%3D%26cutout%3D%26archive%3D1%26name%3D%26groupid%3D%26pseudoid%3D%26userid%3D%26id%3D%26a%3D%26xstx%3D0%26cbstore%3D0%26resultview%3DsortbyPopular%26lightbox%3D%26gname%3D%26gtype%3D%26apalic%3D%26tbar%3D1%26pc%3D%26simid%3D%26cap%3D1%26customgeoip%3D%26vd%3D0%26cid%3D%26pe%3D%26so%3D%26lb%3D%26pl%3D0%26plno%3D%26fi%3D0%26langcode%3Den%26upl%3D0%26cufr%3D%26cuto%3D%26howler%3D%26cvrem%3D0%26cvtype%3D0%26cvloc%3D0%26cl%3D0%26upfr%3D%26upto%3D%26primcat%3D%26seccat%3D%26cvcategory%3D*%26restriction%3D%26random%3D%26ispremium%3D1%26flip%3D0%26contributorqt%3D%26plgalleryno%3D%26plpublic%3D0%26viewaspublic%3D0%26isplcurate%3D0%26imageurl%3D%26saveQry%3D%26editorial%3D1%26t%3D0%26edoptin%3D

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
