I know there are a lot more Rose Medallion punch bowls out there than Nanking (or even Canton). Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen one.

I imagine they're prone to breakage, so their numbers may have thinned out over the years...
UPDATE: I took the bowl back to the store and they very graciously accepted it back and apologized. The saleslady was very interested in learning more and she called me after I left to say that their "expert" was in and they said the bowl was late 19th century but didn't think it was early 20th. She called the consigner and found out that they had paid $4,000 for it and that it was the Filoli Roths who had once owned it. I forwarded the link to Peter's appraisal per their request.
All's well that ends well! *Whew!*
@steve I’m glad it worked out for you maybe the shop will get involved with the forum and Peter. That way no one pays $4000. I like the bowl myself for $400
If they can find proof that it was on display in Filoli or in its inventory, it would increase the value, at least in the Bay Area.
I am curious to find out how they decide to price it and what it sells for. Woudl I buy it for $400? If I had a bigger place I might. Otherwise I will hold out for an older punch bowl.
If 400 was all its money, then only a collector and not a reseller would buy the piece? How much increase would a reseller have to be able to get in order to make the piece viable as a purchase, would it be at least 50% to make it worth the trouble?

That store is an interesting one: they specialize in high-end used furniture and objects, some are antiques, many are not. Prices range from too high to some great bargains, especially if the item has been around for a while. I snapped up a nicely framed Dutch 1748 map of Britain with still-colorful hand tinting for under $100. They used to carry men's clothes; I picked up a $4000 summer suit for $700.
Update: the lady at the consignment store called me up today to give me an update: their appraiser came in to look at the bowl and said it was 1850-1900 & should be priced at 2-4k! I was very cordial but I can tell Peter's appraisal really stuck in her craw, especially the part about the bowl being as late a 1912... Did I want it back? Uh, no thank you.
@steve I like that bowl it is something that I would definitely display proudly. But it’s definitely not a $4000 bowl any how from $2000 to $4000 is not much of an appraisal. Now who am I going to listen to an appraiser or a person that owns there own Asian art gallery that spends most of his day dealing in the field. Now if it was mark and period different story.

There was a dealer back home who used to price thrift store quality items at 400% retail, and sold stuff like literally a Tiffany lamp for $80.00. She bought whole houses, and just priced things depending on how she liked them. Resellers traveled from the big cities to her store regularly.
