Hello Forum,
On the heels of recent Peter’s video about his awesome Kutani vase, and even prior to that, I was searching the online auction sites for a beautiful piece of Kutani…I quickly found that about 99% of it is pleasant looking but nothing that interesting. It takes lots of patience and perseverance to find something worthwhile. One evening about 3-4 weeks ago, I found a wonderful “buy it now” Late Edo/Early Meiji akae Kutani vase on eBay…The seller was non-negotiable so I paid the asking price of $1500.00, which is the most I’ve ever spent on a piece of art, Asian or otherwise! I wanted to share photos and see what others think of it. Thank you your thoughts! I find that the detail is exquisite…Best Regards, Charlotte

It looks beautiful!

Seeing as how you have paid that much already, it might be worth paying a bit more and getting Peter's opinion on it. It would be very enjoyable to hear him discuss it and it may help prove its authenticity, should it ever be necessary.

A beautiful vase you have posted Charlotte.

I think it's a Meiji period 1868-1912.

@julia Hi Julia, Thanks for your thoughts… actually, I got Peters opinion shortly after I purchased it. He says it was a “strong price but worth it”…he also said it’s more of a “retail price.” For me it’s worth it because this level of detail and beauty are so hard to find in Kutani… Can you Imagine if this were Chinese?!

@charlotte Beautiful piece!  I was just admiring a few of my Kutani pieces yesterday....

I'm not really sure what it will take for the market to develop a deeper appreciation for Kutani, but I think good pieces should never be passed up (if you check my earlier posts, I've kicked myself over passing up on some amazing pieces, but I have more than my share in my collection, too).

Perhaps if someone publishes a book, or it makes it into the plot of a major TV show or movie, Kutani could garner the attention it deserves among the youthful art collectors of the world....one can hope!

@greeno107 we need some good pieces to get bid up in auctions by the collectors like us who highly value them. I agree a good book by a respected expert would also help. The auction houses could play a role by giving them representation in good sales with healthy estimates too.

I was outbid on one the other day.  It was beautifully done, a good size, but had cicada handles which I wasn't sure really suited it so I didn't up my bid.  There were several bidders so maybe Peter's video has raised interest?

@julia hi Julia, I think I know which vase you’re referring to, on LiveAuctioneers. I was drawn to that vase as well, for its exquisite artistry, but coincidentally, I, too, was put off by the locust handles. I am not a fan of big, ugly bugs like that! 🙂 Other than that aspect, the vase is a beauty, and I thought the asking price seemed low.

Hi Charlotte, that is interesting. It was on ebay. I wonder if it was the same one. I could only find two others when I was trying to make comparisons. I will put up a link later and you can have a look.
