Well, a little over two weeks later, I have a new quote! $312 has been bumped down to $185. Not great, but more palatable than the original. Isn't it so weird we have to ask them to double-check and it magically goes down? Almost like asking for an itemized bill for healthcare in the US.

I’m happy the fee went down for you. Maybe I didn’t ask politely enough. Yesterday they sent me a survey to ask how happy I was with their service. I said not happy at all because of the shipping costs.

Thank you, Birgit. 😊 I don't think it was because of politeness, though. I mostly pointed out reasons why it was unreasonable, and I think the representative agreed. Probably the last time I buy through them again though. Checked it off my bucket list.

@bartholin What in the hell is wrong with them? Do they pack everything in wooden crates or something? What world are they living in?

@johnshoe

While it was frustrating, I can't tell which party is to blame. They aren't the ones packing since they use a third-party shipper. Is it a predatory third-party company that's taking advantage of the higher-end clients, or is it the lack of oversight and failure to identify unreasonable shipping quotes? My first, but definitely my last purchase through them...

I bought in Paris, maybe their office is less willing to lower the costs. Packing and shipping was done by an external company. They did a good job but you and I would have done the same if we had a cardboard box with 1cm thick walls and styrofoam lining inside.

@bartholin It certainly looks like someone is adding fees on top and it would be good to figure out who. But either way, it feels like the auction house is not taking proper care of their clients and needs to do a better job so they stop alienating their customers.

🤣  - with no disrespect in any way. Just a positive vibe from my end.

$312 to ship a plate "locally"...It's horrible.

@Audrius

I got a 19" charger shipped from Lithuania for 100 Euros with a war going on next door.

That 312 $ is way too much.

The most I was ever charged was £200 for a Japanese imperial vase from Ben Janssens Oriental Art Ltd in the UK to Australia. Originally the shipper that he uses wanted to send it by a wooden crate at a staggering £600.

After discussing it back and forth with Ben we finally agreed on £200. Even though I still believed it to be excessive, it was certainly better than the original quote. Not wooden crate btw. And it arrived very quickly by DHL and undamaged.

@shinigami

It was Case Antiques in TN  that doesn't handle shipping; I won't buy from them again!

Cottone Auctions in NY and Brunk in NC are excellent; both charged only around $60 and packed VERY well (both lots had several (fragile) items).

You're right: we won't forget. If I lived near the auction house it would be another matter but a buyer can find themselves really stuck if they live far away. It think it's very unfair.

I'm always hesitant to write off auction houses because their policies are inferior to some of the other ones.  Sometimes they end up getting the cooler stuff anyway.

This item was super interesting, albeit not an Asian item:

https://caseantiques.com/item/lot-660-civil-war-tiffany-naval-presentation-sword-rear-admiral-cadwalader-ringgold-belt-and-commendations/

A lot of auction houses don't provide in house shipping, and when they do, it's often just for smalls.

@rahawkins

Sorry, it was not worth the stress or money for me. I do not wish to go through that experience again. Do they have cool stuff occasionally? I'm sure they do and will! One just needs to factor in the extra headache and cost of shipping if they don't live nearby. If you have the money and don't mind it, then go for it but that's not for me.
