Hey Folks,
So this is not some big money Chinese export silver piece, but it is certainly steeped in historical intrigue.
The trophy itself was made by Hung Chong of Shanghai and Canton, though to me the two men who received it are far more important to this shiny little piece.
I recently bought this for myself, having grown up in Washington, DC, I have always been amazed at The presence of Americans in foreign nations during extremely contentious times, and how casually they went about their lives, while there.
This little take home trophy cup from the Nanjing Hong Doubles, has the names of John Vincent Carter and Claude A. Buss, lifelong friends, and US Foreign Service officers in China from the mid 1920s to just prior to the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War.
John Vincent Carter was one of the most senior "China Hands", Foreign Service officers, and consuls in china during the republic. He was stationed in China in 1923, and from the very outset of his career he predicted the militarization of the Imperial Japanese Army, and their wanting to expand Japan at all costs. This was virtually ignored and the US government was mostly focused on the Great Depression, and only took notice of his reporting by the late 1930, at which time it was a bit late. He was Sent to Manchuria as US Consul a few weeks before the Manchuria incident, and was essentially held hostage there by the Japanese forces at the consulate during the incident. His testimony to the veracity, or lack there of, of the claims that Chinese militants, blew up the train tracks and started the conflict, is ultimately what led to the post war investigation, which found that the Japanese were likely the instigators.
I should note that during the 1950s and the McCarthy investigations he was accused of being a communist and though ultimately found to not be, his career was destroyed and as far as I know kind of faded into obscurity.
Claude A Buss, had much less tumultuous appointments in China, mostly staying in Nanjing, leaving in 1934 before conflict arose. He was however left behind during the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, as assistant to the US High Commissioner, and ultimately personally surrendered Manila to the Japanese and remained a prisoner of war until 1943.
I find this little trophy cup rather interesting as the tennis match happened during a few major conflicts in China, all while these two men were jumping from post to post to avoid them. I cannot imagine having a relaxing tennis match with friends, a few months after being held prisoner, and a few months before being sent back to yet another post that would be the epicenter of a mini-war.
Anyways, I thought I would share this and I hope you all enjoy it. I think this is a very interesting time in China and something I had never really read about or looked into. Of course now I will have to know more.
Cheers,
Jeremy
PS I will include a link to a book about John Vincent Carter, a long read but very interesting.
Nice silver cup. Extraordinary history/story.
Thank you for sharing.
Mark
That is such an interesting history behind the people involved - I enjoyed reading it very much. Thanks for posting 😀 How tall is it?
Hi Jeremy,
That's fascinating! It must have been very stressful indeed to live in such a place during such perilous times.
I just finished reading The Soong Dynasty yesterday and was floored about what I learned, specifically the seeming indifference of the Chinese Republican leadership to both the dangers of Japan - in fact many at or near the top were profiting from opium trade with the Japanese who then processed it into herion - and the rampant corruption that led to the starvation of Chinese soldiers, peasants, etc etc, giving feul to the communists. During the McCarthy hearings it was chic to wonder "Who lost China?" when in fact Chaing and his cronies definitely set the stage and gave Mao a wide opening.
Having finished that tome, I have now picked up another: Mao; the unkown story by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday, who, I expect, have a better opinion of the Generalissimo. I am bracing myself for some grim reading about the Chariman. Yikes.
I love having conversation peices like your cup. Enjoy!
-Steve
@steve I see Edward Rutherfurd has written another giant fiction book titled China. I loved Sarum, Paris and his two on Ireland. I will read it eventually, His books remind me of Michener.
Steve,
Thanks to you and Sharon I have now filled my amazon cart with about five beat up paperbacks, so My reading should be "booked" solid for the foreseeable future. For me when I get a piece that really tells a story, I tend to dive right in.
Thanks for the book ideas!
Jeremy
This self-possessed little cup has found itself a great home. Ah, the joys of collecting!
John
