Hi mlvbs,
I‘m a bit unsure about your Republic vase. The stamp CHINA was used from 1891-1918, the version with the wrong N possibly early in this period before they noticed the mistake. In my opinion the glaze and especially the bottom of the vase don’t look consistent with that age but much younger.
Birgit
I would have to agree with Birgit.
I looked at this vase a few times before reaching a conclusion of mixed thoughts. The mark as pointed out by Birgit was used on export wares, however there is no stead-fast rule as to its applications. Many wares with similar/other wording are known to exist right up to the 60's and 70's. They are now being produced today to deceive etc.
The retail sticker looks genuine in my opinion and if so would or could place this vase to the very end of the republic period. However, once again I am not totally convinced. The lack of any natural weathering is also of concern along with the glaze.
If I saw this in a retail/other I would have thought without any knowledge of the firms sticker history that it was from the 1960's.
Mark
Dear Birgit and Mark, wow, I'll admit I'm a bit surprised! This was one of those pieces that I considered a "slam dunk," showed it to many people, Michaela, etc, and no one thought it was later. It actually came with a pair, but that one has hairline cracks so I am only selling the one. Showing some pics of the cracked one. These were a very cheap antique store buy.
To me, the sticker is classic 1930s - it's some sort of fabric? And is practically baked on. The font I thought came from Werbeshrift Mammut, which I've seen on art glass from the 1930s and '40s.
If both of you are sure, or even nearly sure, that this cannot be from the Republic period, I will pull the listing.
Thanks, Bill
Hi Bill,
please don't take me as an authority on this field. Maybe I have seen too many fake labels and marks so I was suspicious. Later Republic is a possibility, though after 1919 I would expect a MADE IN CHINA mark. The fact that the vase is still unsold may be a sign that other people are also unsure about it. Perhaps you can get some more feedback from other members here.
Birgit
Thank you, Birgit. I know what you mean - it seems like fake labels, stickers, etc, are everywhere now. It's gotten out of hand. According to Gotheborg "CHINA" without the "made in" continues throughout the 20th century, maybe some pieces also had "Made In China" stickers? I've definitely seen the backwards "N" as a red herring - meant to deceive.
This vase ran as an auction and did ok, $303, but then (of course) the buyer didn't pay, so now it sits...
The fact that something seemed "off" to both you and Mark is enough for me to look into it further, thanks again.
-Bill
In my opinion the moonflask looks OK for guangxu to early republic and the vase late republic to mid century. The colors and and overall style looks a bit later than tongzhi but I have no doubt it will sell well regardless. Good size famille rose moonflasks in good condition always do well.
I saw it sold for $3300. Congratulation! It is a very good high price for this.
Hi Bill,
I took the liberty to ask a couple of friends of mine about the period of your vase.
They thought as I did that based on the enamels and glaze that it was unlikely to be from the early republic period. Probable early PROC.
I/others could of course be wrong. I am also very surprised that Michaela thought it was pre 1949.
I suppose if you where concerned you could list it simply as 'early to mid 20th century'. I note that a number of auction houses including the majors often just list such item that have a probability of being republic period as 20th century.
You did very well with both the moon flask and the superb pair of gilt table stands. Hope they paid! 👍
Mark
Thanks Mark! The screens were paid for, but not the vase. Pretty normal for me, where about 2/3 of items get paid for.
Ah, I pulled the small vase. I'll relist it another day as 20th century. I went back and found my post about the vase on facebook - it was unfair of me to say Michaela thought it was pre-1949...I shared it as being Republic, and the comments of people I trust said "Minguo," "early 20th," etc. People who usually never let anything slide (including Michaela) "liked" it and didn't say anything to correct it.
Thanks,
Bill
