✨ Auction Highlight: Antique Chinese Huanghuali Seal Chest (18th Century) ✨

From the estate of the late Dr. Melvyn H. Koby, ophthalmologist of Louisville, KY, comes a rare treasure: an Antique Chinese Huanghuali Wood Seal Chest, now available at auction through Everything But The House (EBTH).

Huanghuali (黄花梨), the legendary “yellow flowering pear” wood of China, has been cherished since the Ming and Qing dynasties for its golden hues, translucent grain, and subtle fragrance. Once reserved for scholars, nobility, and emperors, genuine huanghuali is among the most coveted antiques in the world.

This beautifully restored 18th-century seal chest embodies the elegance, harmony, and craftsmanship that defined China’s golden age of furniture making. Its warm patina and refined joinery speak not only of utility but of artistry and cultural heritage.

📜 Provenance: Complete receipts and documentation of purchase/import included.
🏛 Estate: From Dr. Melvyn H. Koby (Louisville, KY).

This is more than furniture — it is living history, carrying with it the spirit of Chinese literati culture and the rarity of a wood now almost impossible to obtain.

@loveli4236

Very nice!

I've never registered or bid at that auction house. Do you know what the buyer's premium is? I couldn't find it on the web site.

@steve That was a very intelligent question, Steve, and one that certainly should be clearer on their platform. Everything but the house gets a hodgepodge of estate items. Some are very good, some not. A good eye and proper education go a long way in picking from their platform (I will give the community a great example in a subsequent reply).
EBTH charges no buyers' premiums. Crazy right!! I guess they want bidders more than sellers. They make all their money off of the consigners. Shipping prices are middle of the road, but they do an exceptional job packaging, and their in-house shipping is top-rate.
The terms of their site reads:  By placing a bid, you expressly agree that if you are the winning bidder you will pay for your Auction Item and agree to any additional handling, storage and shipping fees applicable for shipped items.

This lot was sold recently. I think it went way under its value, if my education is correct. Isn't this part of a very historical set? I didn't get to bid, and when I saw it, my heart sank. In my estimation this lot was worth about 10 thousand or a little more. Am I missing something. I know the large serving plate has minor damage, but still... 700.00!!! Wow.

@loveli4236 Cincinnati is a bit of an antique hub, isn't it? I was there a few years ago and went to an amazing shop specializing in old saloon bars. He said they ship to places all over the country.

I'll register with this auction house and keep an eye on what's coming up. Their shipping rates seem reasonable.

@steve You probably visited the Wooden Nickel. I knew the founder, Mike Williams. The store started in Covington, Ky. on Pike st. 1/2 a block away from my father's night club, The Top Shelf Lounge. He may still own it. They do get great things. Many families in the Tri-state area have little to no knowledge concerning oriental collectables and antiques and unusual items can still be found.
This is an example:
https://www.ebth.com/items/14224446-chinese-lacquered-wedding-sedan-chair-with-carved-latticework-and-guardian-lion
It ends today. It is not mine and I have no idea who is selling it, but it is certainly unusual to find in Cincinnati, IMO.

The piece in question looks like a very nice example of Huanghuali.

The metal fittings maybe be later.

Thanks, Mark, Roger looked it over, and I believe he was of the same opinion. Although, he indicated that the hardware was appropriate and probably original. The fittings were most surely totally removed before restoration and replaced upon completion. Here are additional photos for the community. These are all I have. Some will be repetitive. I love the box. It is a beauty. I'm selling to raise capital for a business venture with my son.

Hi Jamie,

Its one of the nicest Huanghuali boxes that I have seen in a long time.

I hope that you get the price it truly deserves.

BTW who is Roger?

Thanks, Mark. I need collectors to place bids. I know that I chose the wrong platform to sell it on, but I'm in a pickle to raise capital for a business venture. I did not really want to part with it but necessity mandates. I was referring to Schwendeman. Hopefully he will inform the right collectors.
