So I bought a couple of Yuan-style blue and white vases recently because I thought they looked interesting and could possibly be period but after looking closer at the pictures provided in the listing I have to admit to myself that they are almost definitely not Imperial Yuan dynasty blue and white vases. But they sure look like old porcelains and I think they are likely old copies, probably from Vietnam - or somewhere else? I just learned that one of the two vases I purchased is very similar to a vase in Topkapi Sarai Museum in Istanbul. Apparently this is a very famous vase and possibly unique? So I'm thinking that the vase I have might actually be a rare and valuable "discovery"?
My Questions are if there are more Vietnamese vases like this out there in museums or private collection and if there are any similar Chinese Yuan/Ming vases like this known?
That's an interesting question. I know there are some beautiful blue and white stoneware pieces from the Le dynasty (15th - 16th c.) but don't see one like the photo in my book on it (The Elephant and the Lotus).
Have you consdidered having Peter appraise your vases?
No, I'm not going to have it appraised by Peter. But the vase I bought have a reddish-orange burned base while Vietnamese blue and white vases seem to have white, beige or brown bases. So I'm thinking that my vase is actually Chinese but possibly made in the Ming rather than Yuan dynasty. But I don't know.
The thing with the Swatow ware. Did Swatow kiln copy Yuan dynasty imperial blue and white ware???

It depends what you mean by "copy". Many of the designs and motifs that began in the Yuan continued into the Ming, including pieces produced for export at Zhangzhou and other Southern kilns. The evolution of those designs over time can be an important clue for dating a piece.
But as they say "A picture is worth a thousand words." With that exchange rate, you're running up a bit of a debt, and missing some valuable opportunities, like Stuart's offer to help.
Do you know where I can see pictures of those Zhangzhou and southern kilns blue and white pieces. In a book for example. I'm particularly looking for pictures of vases and jars. I can only find very few pictures of jars online and all from auctioneers.
There was BTW four or five Yuan-style pieces available and I think I have a few pictures of all of them on my computer. Might post some of them later.
The source actually also had a couple Yuan-style blue jars available that was stated to be Vietnamese but the sale of these had already ended when I bought the vase so I don't have the any pictures of these unfortunately. I have come across similar Vietnamese Yuan-style blue and white pieces for sale before but didn't pay much attention to them since I thought they probably would'n't be overly valuable but it seems I might have been wrong in that assumption.
