Greetings all!
Excuse my pun in my title! I really have been very busy buying around the USA for the past months, as well as working on some home/business projects.
With Covid mostly under control, I've been hitting the estate sale market hard and I've turned up a number of pieces going into Christie's fall sale in NY. I hope everyone has had equally good luck - it does seem to me that this spring has produced a better than expected number of quality finds.
Anyhow, I'm dropping off some pieces in NY and then heading to the big spring antique show in Brimfield MA. I'm only scheduled to sell on one day at the Dealer's Choice sale on May 10th, but I'll be up for about a week, so if you're in the area, please feel free to come by/drop a line, and say hello.

I've only been to Brimfield one time a few years ago to buy...it was AMAZING! I spent $500 on various Chinese antiques within the first 1 hour of walking around, and quickly sold them to Chinese buyers who were also walking around - made $3,000 cash before I left the sale that day!
However, this was about 5 years ago, so I have no idea as to what to expect, especially in this post Covid world we live in. Fingers crossed.
I'm bringing a lot of good antique Chinese furniture - mostly hongmu, but a few 20th c. huanghuali pieces, too. I'll have some porcelains, cloisonne, a late Ming bronze tripod censer, several paintings, and a variety of odd & end pieces. I expect my prices will range for most of my items from around $20 to $5,000, but I'll also bring my Qing huanghuali partner's desk with marble inset top, priced to sell at just $50,000 - helps to draw a crowd and I'm not sure there will be anyone at this show ready to drop that kind of cash (but I have heard this does happen).
Watched several of Peter's recent videos...glad to see he is up and about! I, too, love the beauty of fine Kutani!
Best to all!
Tim
Tim we have been thinking about you and have missed your expertise. Welcome back.
@lotusblack Thank you for the kind words!
As the youngest of three in a house full of extremely opinionated siblings, I know how to make my voice heard.
However, there’s plenty of good shared knowledge among all of our members, so by the looks of it, you were in very good hands in my absence.
So glad you are back in contact with the forum. I’m sure you have some great stories to share with us.
Thanks gentlemen!
I’ve picked up a story or two during the last few months, for sure.
Some details I might need to leave out until after the fall sale, but much of what has been working for me has been the techniques I’ve preached all along.
Tim
Good to hear from you Tim and happy that you had good hunting these past months. Good luck with the upcoming sales. You have been missed. Sharon
Really nice to have you back, Tim. We have been worried. Looks like you are doing well. Wish I could get to Brimfield, sounds great! Hope it goes well for you. 😊
Glad you’re back, Greeno. I really missed your wise commentaries.
Birgit
Hi Tim - and as with others, welcome back ...
Best of luck at the forthcoming antiques show, and also with the pieces consigned to Christies later in the year ...
Stuart
Thank you, all!
I very much missed the discussions we shared.
I had been justifiably busy, but I also want to acknowledge that I had been finding that my views/comments were running counter to others - perhaps not in a constructive way as intended.
So, you could say that I spent the last three months ‘walking the walk’ so that I can now ‘talk the talk’.
Spoiler alert - I believe more than ever that the quality of craftsmanship and consistency with known period examples remain the most important elements of authentication of Chinese antiques.
To make an analogy - collecting Chinese antiques is like climbing Mount Everest.
You could try climbing it alone, find a path nobody else has taken, and learn what to do as you go, despite the warnings of more seasoned climbers. But statistically speaking, you’d be much more likely to fall to your death than make it to the summit.
The truth of this challenging sport is that while success depends strongly on our individual efforts, it is in fact a team sport.
Traveling the path that others have successfully taken, and embracing their help and their warnings does not dilute the sweet taste of mastering such a difficult obstacle for yourself.
In close, I just hope we all make it to the summit together!
Tim
Thanks for the update, Tim! Sounds like an exciting time. I enjoy the vicarious thrills of your wheeling and dealing and antique collecting wisdom.
I'm afraid you'll need some enormous flowers to put in that vase!!!
Regards,
Steve
Tim,
So glad to see you back on here.
Always appreciate your differing opinions, they make us look harder at pieces. I for one have really begun to notice the craftsmanship and the quality before looking at anything else.
Looking forward to you newest finds.
Cheers,
Jeremy
