Ok, we're not going to play that game, but it is a real question I have.  When posting on a forum, and sharing pictures of your own collection especially, would you want to hear the truth about your piece not being authentic?

I know, it's not fun to be doubted on anything, but for sure, we are all here to learn and improve our collecting experience...

It is what it is!

It's hard to tell someone they've bought a bad or late piece thinking it was much older.  I use to dread having to do it many years ago.

It crushes the excitement of having made a "Amazing Find"  only to learn it's a modern knockoff.  It causes people to question themselves and doubt their own judgement and it's depressing. It can for some to be terribly discouraging. We've all done it and felt it at some point along the way.  It happens much, much less as you go along learning.

Quite often good hard earned money has gone into bad  or faked pieces. Which is why I refer to it as a "TAX" i.e.  the cost of learning.

As dealers, we have to let people down all the time.  We want to buy great things but aren't from a business standpoint going to buy copies to avoid hurting anyone's feelings.

In the long run, telling the absolute truth is the best approach.  It only hurts for a little while and it is one of the ways you learn.

It's definitely best to hear the truth!

And hey, if you bought something that turns out to be modern not because you like it, but because you wanted to "score", then perhaps you need to gain more experience before trying to hit the jackpot!

Hi everyone, for myself, I would prefer truth always as I have said before.  There is a caveat to that, in that if you need to inform someone, more likely a brand new collector or a seasoned veteran that their piece is modern or contemporary knockoff, it should be done with respect and care and empathy as we have all had to pay the tax or dues or what have you.  People who collect are passionate about what they collect and I'm speaking for myself and I'm sure the majority of collectors.  So let people down as easy as possible but always the truth.  For myself it's the truth to the death, literally.  Some may get that others not, it's ok.  Going to the Miami Beach Antique show today already bought my tickets so have to go:) will be putting up the pictures later this evening or tomorrow.

Buy what you like, with some experience and learning, you have a better chance of finding a correct. You really never go wrong if it pleases you.

Truth is better. And sometimes we learn the hard way.

In my experience (which is not a lot I have to say, 5-6 years) sometimes people just dont want to listen, but that is a mistake. It takes a lot of guts to be humble and say "I did a mistake". And not everyone has them.

Also I appreciate when someone has taken me down to the floor and beaten me up for a while in the past. You can use the battering and gain experience from it ???

It definitely hurts to think you have something genuine, to then find out its not. But to think you have something genuine, when you don’t, is unhelpful in so many ways. It will cost you money in the future, because of the lack of insight which you would have gained by knowing the truth. You may try to sell the piece in the future, and misrepresent it, which I would hate to do. There is simply no justification for wanting to be kept in the dark. As Peter said, it just hurts for a little while.

take it with a grain of salt

Truth is great But: many times people take others opinions as truth,  and do not do their own do diligence

If you give me an opinion then you better back it up or I will pass on it, too many know it alls that know very little but want to be thoughtas an expert.

Go to the horse races and you will see what I mean, everyone knows what horse is going to win when you are in line to buy a ticket and I have heard many stories when it comes to porcelain, even from curators being wrong, dead wrong, how many bronzes and porcelains have the museums bought that later found out it was fake

No I will do my homework  and you better know something if you want me to except your opinion, however I think opinions are very necessary because opinions are what you are made of, your up bringing, your religious values etc... so to voice then is great but for people to take them as truth is another story - rich
