After a recent bout in the hospital I was thinking: “We spend a good portion of our lives studying, enjoying and collecting. When we are no longer here then who in our families will appreciate or understand many of the items we have collected. I try to document many of the better items in my collection and have discussed the porcelain, landscape scrolls and Tang horses with my son, but will they know of our love for the beauties we have accumulated?

It is George, and I do, not just Chinese things either. There is so much more than simple financial value bound up with certain things we own, that may never be fully appreciated even by members of our families who see how we feel about them. I simply hope that the things I treasure will find new owners to love them like I did and indeed like those who owned them before me.
Do you have a favourite item?
An interesting topic, dear George. As I have no heirs I plan to auction it all off when I’m old. From the money I’ll buy a single really expensive piece that I take with me to the retirement home. Like Julia I see myself as one in a long row of owners. And even in the worst case, if the house clearance people put the items on Ebay they will find another owner who might treasure them.

My favorites are several Japanese landscape scrolls painting great mountains and waterfalls in Chinese style. Some have dates locations and artist signatures. One of these has a clear Meiji Year 8 (1875) date.

It is very rare, although not unknown, for direct sons/daughters ext to have same/similar interests in collecting - the Rockefeller's, Walters, Butler and Winkworth’s are exceptions rather then the rule …
As Julia implies, we are all just brief custodians of are pieces and can only hope that, in time, others enjoy them as much as we have …

@gfhandel George, first of all happy to see you well enough to be posting! You post a really interesting topic. I think one of the benefits of even at least documenting is that it will show, wherever it ends up, your true love of collecting and what you have lived with. Gives a personal voice to the collection and allows you to share its story in your own words.

Those that have tried have often been disturbed in their rest by grave robbers and archaeologists (often the only difference is that one has a degree). I feel an obligation to certain family pieces, as for the rest, I think like Birgit that I would enjoy dispencing the best, which in my case would for the most part, be part of my book collection, which I am certain that my heirs will have little desire or use. I once had an author tell me that if she signed my ARC, "it will be worth a thousand dollars." She signed it, but she may have been speaking hyperbole, but she can be forgiven as she was/is a Texas author and we are given to hyperbole by right and it was the eighties. Sharon

@lotusblack Same here but no vase. We'll have a Missouri Red Granite tombstone in the family cemetery, to match the other recent family stones color scheme, but I've told my husband if I go first scatter my ashes in the woods adjacent to the cemetery. If there is a good old fashioned Missouri storm, I may get to travel again.
