the kangxi globular pot is a very good comparative piece: there is a world of difference between the precisely applied lines suggesting water there and the wavy , extended ones on the modern piece, that cross into the trees etc.
also look at the far mountains , clearly defined and shaded on the older piece, smudged in by a finger or something on the new vase.
The blurring on the second old vase is done in many shades to suggest depth and movement, whereas on the modern vase it's just slapdash
tam
Thank you for your comments, tam18, I see the differences you describe with the Kangxi pieces, but please explain why the vase is modern and not Republic period. As far as I know, in late Qing and Republic period there were already much lesser shades of blue used, and different qualities of painting exist in all periods...
Best, Mat
Hi Tam, I wasn't showing the Kangxi pieces to say that they are similar. I was just showing that straight lines are a common way of depicting water in Chinese porcelain (contrary to timon18's comment that 'some odd horizontal lines denoting water', straight lines denoting water are not odd), I also showed the second blurred vase to show how there is a wide range of decorating styles in Chinese porcelain, and just because something seems 'smudged' or 'blurred' it doesn't mean that it is bad quality or unskilled.
Also as for the decoration being 'slapdash', it is a good quality vase no matter how you look at it. It is not meant to be strictly copying Kangxi porcelain, it's a Republic period vase trying to be just that, a Republic period vase. If they were trying to copy a Kangxi vase they wouldn't use that black decoration.
I don't have a firm view on when this was made, I just think is there any reason why it could not have been made in the past few years, in terms of form, decoration , footrim etc? Given the number of this kind of vase on the market , I think modern is more likely. I agree it's not trying to emulate a kangxi style, and purports to be republican, hence the CHINA mark, but given the rise in prices for republican vases, and the variations in style and quality in the republican period, it has become much more worthwhile for copiers, or 'emulators' to produce republican style pieces.
tam
Thank you tam18, it was part of an older collection the dealer bought which had other old porcelain in it, too. Of course that is no guarantee, but I am quite confident it was not made in the past few years...

Mat
