Hi All,
is that one Fake? diameter c. 8 cm, height c. 3.5 cm
Best Regards Damian
Dear Damian,
Your anhua-decorated cup bears the sticker of J. T. Tai and Co., which suggests a highly reputable pedigree. But then of course, stickers can be faked, and often are. For example, fake stickers indicating a provenance amongst the Carl Kempe collection have become infamous in recent years.
So I'd like to ask, where did you find your bowl? And also, I'd suggest that if you actually own it (you don't tell us if it's yours or not), take a powerful eye loupe and examine the glaze over the retrospective Chenghua reign mark on the base. Describe to us what the bubbles in the glaze appear to you to be like. These bits of information will help us form an opinion.
Best wishes,
Alan
I do not own the cup!
I found him on an auction and want to buy.
With the label I know that often are fake.
I try to get better photos
Dear Damian,
Thank you for your further information on this bowl. Then my follow-up question is, is the auction house where it is being offered for sale reputable, and does it offer to refund bidders their money if it can be shown that the item they have bought was incorrectly described?
Because you haven't been able to inspect the bowl personally and to check the base in the way I have suggested, it is difficult to form an adequate impression of it from photographs alone. Physical inspection seems to be essential in this case. But if the auction house is not prepared to honour its catalogue description, then that would be a cause for concern anyway.
Best wishes,
Alan
With auction house I have experiences.
There are 5 people and know everything?
Example photos estimation 2000 €
Morning!
May I please ask what the bubbles in the glaze should be like over an apocryphal chenghua mark and is that as opposed to how they would look over a real one?
Best wishes,
Julia
Hi Damian,
Nice cup. It looks like a Yongzheng piece. The apocryphal chenghua mark looks fine. Yongzheng was very good at copying Chenghua and others. You should check the provenance, there must be something if it's from J. T. Tai.
Let us know if you have more information of it.
Can you show us the website of this auction house?
Best regards,
Xin

Hi Xin
I found a sticker is from Altair Auctions.
And for comparison of the white cup
Damian
right photo is from Altair
Dear Damian and Xin,
The mark may look fine, but it almost certainly isn't. Was this cup was with Altair Auctions in the USA?? Don't touch it!!!! Ask Peter's advice if you want to get a further warning from him about stock sold via this auction house.
Best wishes,
Alan

Thank you Alan for warning us. Altair Auctions is really a "funny" company. Can't believe that people buy things from them.
Best regards,
Xin

I agree with the posts from Alan and Xin.
Alan, Peter has already posted a warning about Altair auction selling fakes.
I personally don't know or have heard of the company with the sticker attached to the cup. But it appears old and is written in ballpoint.
Ballpoint pens only became popular in the 60's and were very expensive to buy in the 50's. Having said that they used fountain pens.
Mark
Hi Mark,
Which stickers do you mean?
The light left is from the white cup.
The second from Altair.
Damian
I'm waiting for macro photos from seal mark.
Hi damien,
Did a little research on said company.
J.T. Tai was born Tai Jun Tsei in 1910. He started out as an apprentice to his uncle who had an antique shop in Wuxi. Moved to Hong Kong in 1949. Opened up a gallery in New York in 1950 and has been acclaimed one of the great post-war dealers of fine art selling collections to the like of Avery Brundage and Arthur Sackler.
I have uploaded a couple of pictures of his labels. One The bottom one) being from the 'Chinese Ceramics and works of Art - J.T.Tai and Co' Sotheby's 22nd March 2011. The other I do not know from where it came from. But you can see the difference between this and the other
I have also uploaded a pdf from Marchant(u will have to download, but well worth it) that also has images from his collection and other a very good read.
Hope this assists you in determining if the label from Altair is genuine or not
Mark
