In a hidden category of Ebay Germany, where no one ever goes, I found these two Republic hat stands. Although they were not made to be a pair, they most probably came out of China together and spent the last decades in the same household, so I just had to buy both of them (and got them for about half the market price).
Older hat stands had holes for ventilation, but in Republic they lost their function and became purely decorative items. The standard size is around 28 cm. They almost always have a rubbed gold rim on top. Other than Republic vases, hat stands don't seem to be been faked that much. If you google "republic hat stand" you find mostly originals. Some fakes exist but are easily recognisable. As they are rather affordable (usually around $200-250) I could well imagine collecting them, but I'm really running out of space at home.
Apart from the typical hat stand motifs with plants and birds and lovely ladies in pale colors, a new style came into fashion from about 1920. More colorful, more freely painted. The faces became more expressive with bulbous noses. I look at the hat stand with the family and ask myself if customers in the 1920s might have found it ugly or revolutionary. The other hat stand is painted more conventionally but also has these strong colors, without looking garish. The motif (a sheperdess exchanging a paper roll with a man who is accompagnied by a servant) is more interesting than on many other hat stands where there are just ladies sitting around. It might be a scene out of literature, but I don't know what it means.
I guess there's a 1920 date on the vase with the sheperdess and animals. I'm really bad at finding and deciphering date marks so maybe someone could confirm it. The vase with the family has no date as far as I can see, but Gotheborg has the same red stamped mark on a dated piece from 1921.

The painter is 潘肇唐 Pan Zhaotang. He was famous at that time. Nice catch.

Well done dear Birgit!
I agree that the second scene must represent something, but I do not know which one.
Giovanni
A famous painter, that's cool! Thanks for the translation Xin. Republic pieces seem to be full or surprises (provided you can read the inscriptions).
Birgit
Nice catch!
Sought after artist who lived from about 1900-1961 or there about.
Saw a pair of vases by same artist that were damaged and sold for $2800euros.
Mark
Yes I saw the vases on Rob Michaels auctions too, but the way he painted the faces was more colorful on these vases and the writing of the signature was different. Would a great master paint a simple hat stand? Or were the painters copied by others?
Birgit
I can't answer your questions, but wow! What a lovely buy, well done!
Thank you for all the info, too. That is very helpful.
Julia
Thanks, Julia! On the other hand, if he was born in 1900 he was still very young when he did the hat stand. Probably still learning the more conventional style, and his personal style changed later. Where did you find the life dates, Mark? I couldn't find more about him than the rm-auction vases:
Birgit
Very informative thread and your pictures are nicely put together, thank you very much!
Sorry my post on the life span of Pan Zhaotang was and is incorrect.
Mistaken the listing for Pan Yongbing as the other from gotheborg site.
There appears to be very little listed/known about the artist.
Mark
Hair Styles! The hair styles of the figures are Republic. The would be different on Qing pieces. Just a thought to add to the thread. Best wishes.
Just a thought about hatstands - although they are humdrum items usually in the west, in China these would be one of the accroutrements of the scholar official , to dry out or keep aired his official's hat with all its insignia and decorations , so I think these were high status items (like scholars' objects) and so probably just as valued as vases, pen washers, brushpots etc.
