I flew into Phoenix this weekend to visit family and hunt. In my hunt in Scottsdale I noticed everything was picked clean. The world is hunting also and the competition knows this area well. After two sold days nothing unless I wanted average items at full retail. So I switched areas more rural less hunters. I went to a place I have been in a hundred times and only found one good item until today. You always have to check every glass case. At first I thought it was a resin fake. Until I had them open the case. I knew what it was but no one else did not even the vender as the tag was labeled incorrectly. This is why I hunt to find these treasures. I expect this to be offered soon at one of the big auction houses.
I assume that it's a Japanese inro made from boxwood.
Never seen one like this before. Very interesting.

Not sure what you paid, but this looks fairly modern, but there seems to be a market for these boxwood pieces ranging from $200+.
Since the ban on ivory, China has been making / selling ornately carved boxwood netsuke, okimono, and the like. Usually they have rounded edges to the carving and a more stylized look (animation like) rather than realist.
Genuine and true antique boxwood netsuke are in huge demand as you can imagine after the ivory ban.
I’ve only come across two in the past ten years outside of auction.
@greeno107 well I guess you know have seen 3. I understand the faking aspect of everything the good thing is their is good information on this carver and his school that was located in Japan his style and lots of comparisons. The box wood itself is aged. I actually own about 20 Chinese Netsukes that I purchased years back in Aspen the Chinese version are very easily spotted.
@lotusblack Brian, the tone of my post came out wrong - I’m really sorry.
I do like the piece, but manner of the inro and netsuke seemed unusual.
Boxwood pieces are very rare - I suppose I’m just jaded by the abundance of copies, which I have owned many as they are generally really well made and seem to be collectible.

@greeno107 no need to apologize everything is being copied and has to be scrutinized. As I develop experience and handle examples it helps to see the piece better. I actually owned a ivory netsuke that was a 12 zodiac from the Aspen lot. It was very high quality and was also modern it was listed as modern carving and still sold for 30x what I paid. The reason I knew it was modern is modern factory carvers cut corners it’s like the porcelain there are good copies but are detected by the cutting of corners. The inro I purchased is unusual in the fact that it has a horse pull down. That was a extra step in carving a copier could of easily added a second hole and sold it for a lot more as a stand alone netsuke it is very tiny and would have taken a great amount of time and skill. I read that a piece this small is much harder to carve then larger pieces.
