The septre is dated at mid 20th century.
I also think the inlaid is a bit odd. It's not well-done. Especially the love ducks. If I decide that I am interested I will examine it in person.
It's with a high end gallery for their upcoming auction. Price estimate of $1000-2000aud.

That alter table you had was fantastic.
Those tests you mentioned are probably one of the best tests out there at the moment. Very reliable.

@imperialfinegems Are they an auction house? I clicked the link... I dont see any antiques.
Hi greeno107,
Sorry the link I provided is their gallery link. They also have this advisory link. Why I don't know.
The main owner used to be the director of mossgreen auctions before they went bankrupt a few years back. Prior to their demise they were a big auction house. If Michael is reading this he will know who I am writing about.
This is the another section that holds auctions. Just click on the top lhs and scroll down to current and past auctions. Then scroll down to asian art auction.

They are a relatively new group (both) with a few well-known dealers on board.
I also do like the cover piece. The dragon silver vase.
Your absolutely right about the septre. Every time I look at it the colour and grain looks odd. I just thought originally it was me!
Mark
@imperialfinegems That is a nice silver vase! The two photos of the ruyi scepter on invaluable look very pretty, too, but I still feel the whole design is strange.
This type of inlay is famous in boxes, but I don't know if it was done in scepters, other than modern decorations. The opening bid seems a fair price if the wood actually is zitan, but not the estimated amount.
Hi greeno107,
My sentiments exactly. I am normally very mean when buying etc. I was thinking that if its genuine zitan then about $800 plus bp.
The vase is beautifully depicted with dragons and from a known maker. I am very partial to dragons. But it's expensive. But may be OK for just under the opening bid. I like the vase better than the septre to be honest.
I keep thinking about your zitan table. It was beautifully rendered! You have some fantastic woods on hand including that Huanghuali piece you posted recently.
I may go and have a look at the opening at both the vase and septre.
Mark
@imperialfinegems. Thank you! Early on, I chased Chinese furniture rather than porcelains, because there was less chance of fakery, and as long as the wood was high quality hardwood I could resell and make a good profit. Nowdays, buying wood objects is not so cut and dry, and there are good fakes.
I think I've owned about a hunderd pieces or so over the last few years, and of those, only 5 or so were of huanghuali or zitan.
I don't buy at auction, so what ever the market produces, I buy if the quality is good.
I have a huge pair of dragon cabinets, with matching hat cabinets, that will blow your mind! They're from the 1970-80's and were made when China opened to the world and the last of the master artisans were creating imperial style furniture copies.
Let me take a look to see if I have a pic or two.
@imperialfinegems Here is a pic of one of the two cabinets - I have a matching pair, plus the matching hat cabinets that fit on top. They're more than 2 meters tall with the hat cabinets in top, and weigh a friggin ton!
I'm going to exhibit them in West Palm Beach later this week at an antique show, but it f there's not a good offer, I'll set them up at home....might have to knock down a wall to fit them.
Hi greeno107,
What a fantastic pair of intricately carved cabinets/other you have.
Are these really from the 70's. They look older but then it's only a couple of pictures. From a distance they look awesome my friend.
What wood are they?
Regards,
Mark
BTW : you don't mind if I keeps your email address.
@imperialfinegems Of course you can keep my email! Contact me anytime!
The wood is rosewood, regular huali, but the carving is quite nice and captures some variations in the grain that make it look more like huanghuali. I've seen at auction some examples stained to look like zitan, but often the clouds are less detailed than mine, and the frame of the cabinets are usually uncarved
I seem to remember back in the 1970's that the Chinese government set up living exhibits at major museums where artisans demonstrated their talents.
I once owned a 9 dragon cinnabar table from this period. Had it been genuine Qianlong, it would have been worth millions.
@imperialfinegems Here's a rather bad photo of the top of the 9 dragon cinnabar round center table I once owned. I bought it from a New York couple that got the table for free when bought a beautiful ocean front condo in South Florida from an unnamed billionaire.
I had hopes when I bought it that it was Qianlong, but Sothby's advised it was late 20th c, cultural revolution period.
In hindsight, they would have done well to run it through auction, but I did fine with it on my own.
Hi greeno107,
Still it was a beautiful example. I would have loved to have owned it. Even if it was a cultural revolution piece. They in themselves are becoming sought after. Especially if done for a special opening etc. Added bonus if by a known artist at the time. Or at least his style.
Sotheby's are funny people sometimes. I don't know when you had it. I suspect if it was submitted today they would have definitely taken it in. Cultural stuff is the rage at the moment!

@greeno107 impressive Pieces Mao must have been pleased 🤣

I doubt it very much. He would have been too busy admiring the young ladies! 🤣

Hello All,
I see this thread has moved on in a variety of different ways and directions. So will just say some very nice things posted by @greeno107 and would like to wish him good luck at the Palm Beach sale. Can't add anything about @imperialfinegems scepter that has not already been said. Just a silly aside on Zitan, it i so dense and heavy that it sinks in water, there are only two other timbers that will do this Lignum Vitae and Ebony not very practical I know, not suggesting anybody chuck their valuable table into a lake to see if sinks but it might be usefully to test small items at least you will have whittled the possible candidates for the timber timber down to three and as there are other difference's between them you should be able find an answer. The point being if your possible Zitan item floats then it's not worth your time investigating further.
Interesting thread and lots of really nice items to view.
Michael
@brettm Ha, good one, can't tell the players without a scorecard but these long threads are informative and chatty, which are very enjoyable. Best, Sharon
