@william So then these are mark and period bowls that Sotheby's didn't want to correctly label because they didn't have enough provenance? If that is true then it is confirmation about what some forum members have been saying about them, which is kind of unfortunate. I mean, if they need some more experts to help them out they could ask a few of you guys to work part-time for them. I'm sure there are some well qualified forum members who'd be willing to lend a hand.
@johnshoe Or the bidders were from Crazy Town and Sotheby's has provided some provenance to good quality fakes because no one can tell the difference, it will be interesting to see what becomes of them in the after market. Objecction your Honor, speculation (pure speculation, wilder than the twenties stock market).
Anyone that has had experience working for a large corporation knows that the legal department can have the final say about issues that could expose the company to legal action. My guess is there are in house policies & procedures that fence in the house expert’s decisions regarding age. Another possible reason for lack of expertise in a large corporation could be employee turnover or transfers between departments. It is a rare thing in business today for any employee to stay 20 or 30 years in one position or department and gain extreme expertise & knowledge of a particular subject matter.
@william We know now that the bidders were not napping, they were bidding on Sotheby's bowls and yes a little CYA from legal in case it comes back on them. It is a free market and if someone wants to pay for the cachet of saying, "I bought it from Sotheby's," most likely in Chinese, then so be it. Caveat Emptor. Also it is correct that there was a time in this country when privacy mattered and the last thing anyone wanted was their name being bandied about, as Peter said in his video.
Look at the price! Big part of this collection is sold over the estimates hunderdfold.
This collection dosen't have conviencing provenance, that's why Sotheby's faild. They are not capale to work without provenance.
Not everything can be copied. They are just paranoid. And big dealers around the world too. I've heard a lot of stories.
This collector is very confident. He knew who is buying. And he knew a true collector and expert can see the truth.

Christie’s had a Yongzheng bowl estimated rather low, and stayed in the title, ‘probably of the period’, that also blew the estimate out of the water.

There could be other reasons for the cautious approach to the dating.
Perhaps there is some inside knowledge of highly sophisticated fakes having come from this specific source/consignor.
Or, maybe the consignor gave provenance from a reputable source that stated the piece(s) were early 20th c, so they didn’t want to contradict the provenance, and felt the piece(s) would still perform well above expectations.
Xin, do you know the consignor? I haven’t dealt with Sotheby’s in many years, so I am purely speculating.
I see there is a republic period vase in the sale that is similar to another republic period vase sold for the price of a mark and period at Sotheby's in 2011.
This bowl is described as Yongzheng mark and period but sold for 176,000 against a 4000 - 6000 estimate.
