Good evening everyone! I found this cup today while I was out and about. I don’t know much about cloisonné, because I have never really been drawn to the style but there was something about this cup that made me purchase it. I have never seen anything that looked like this before and found it quite fascinating. It is 2” tall and 2-1/2” wide. It does have some dings but I am thinking with it’s age, it’s probably common. I figured that I would turn to the experts here on bidamount to help educate me on cloisonné and possible help me identify my new find. As always, I appreciate everyone’s posts, they are always informative and help me grow. Please forgive me for my lighting.
Thanks again!
Jessica
The central design is interesting - I haven't seen one quite like it before. It seems sort of abstract, but probably symbolic of something. The rest of the design has typical elements. It's an interesting color as well. I can see why you would be attracted to it. I would guess it is 19th or early 20th C, but let's see what others have to say.
The pattern on the body is 20th century. I think the cup is mid century. The wire work is not great the cup was done in haste. The symbol is most likely ‘Shou’
I don't think it is shou, I suspect it may be just an abstract shape. I had a good look but can't find anything similar. I think the shape is ok for late 19th early 20th c but that central circle is strange. It does make me wonder about a later date as Brian suggests.
I also find the rim and base bands very shiny (possibly due the lighting that Jessica mentioned) however, why then are the cloisons so dark? You would think they would be giving a hint of colour at least.
There is a circle on each side and the circle match the opposite side so basically there are two matching pairs. So I purchased these from a “hidden treasures” type of store. They purchase boxes from estates but don’t really go through anything… Thats a good thing for people like me who love to dig for treasures. Luckily I was there during the 1/2 off sale! It had a price tag of .25 cents so I purchased it for a whole .12 cents! I was afraid to clean it because I honestly did not really know to clean it without possibly damaging it. I would really love to clean it up and see what it really looks like if someone could lead me in the right direction on how to do that. 😊
thanks again for all of your help!
jessica
