Hi,
Please could someone tell me what I am looking at here? It is on ebay, I have put some of the photos into the post otherwise we will lose it when the item sells, which it will do in 4 days. The bidding has just gone over £1000 already. This is described (by a seller Peter often features in his videos, in a positive way) as a 19th c small, lidded pot. It is marked on the base and seemingly, inside the lid.
It seems to be very desirable, judging by the bids, but that surprises me a bit but maybe that is the expected price. I think it is very nice but maybe not quite over £1000 special. Am I wrong, am I missing something? Is it older than 19th c? Is the mark the name of an important artist? I can only read (I think!) zheng - maybe?
Thanks for looking.
Julia

I agree the price seems outlandish - I think it's older than C19th , and the condition is very good;
also there is something about chicken cups and what they symbolize about the Qianlong Emperor's taste (if I can remember correctly) , so this may be a rare qianlong bowl. The impressed 4 character mark is I think a reference to a hall or place in the Imperial palace or household.
The incised black mark is a later owner's mark, and yes I think Zheng is the family name.

Hello,
The two characters on the right mean "Inner Agency" which is Qing Dynasty's agency that supervised the manufacturing of all daily items used inside the imperial palace. If this box is one of the items, this means it is from the imperial palace. Maybe this is why the bidding is outrageously high. But this is just my guessing since I don't know what the other two other characters mean.
Kelly
Thanks Tam and Kelly. I think you are right it has to have something special about it, interesting about those characters - maybe that is the reason for the high bidding.
I notice the lid is also glazed inside and partly on the inner rim, possibly that is also a sign of quality?
I will keep an eye on it, thanks for your help.
Julia
Really beautifully done, especially as it's so small. I thought for a moment of partaking in the bidding, but then I saw that several zero feedback bidders are pushing the price up almost since the beginning. This is a bad sign, as you would expect only more experienced buyers to see the real value of the item. Well probably it won't be paid for, so it might be worth watching the item in case it's relisted.
Birgit
Dear all,
in my opinion this is not old. The raised mark is a bad sign to me. The style of painting the rocks is odd. I have never seen an hen on the rock that way, which is usually made for pheasants. Strange item and strange bidding story.
I may be wrong but that is what I think.
Giovanni
Thanks for the additional replies, Shini and Giovanni. Yes, the bidding is odd. That is a lot of 0 rated bidders for an expensive 19th c pot. The whole thing is a indeed a little strange.
The seller’s items are featured regularly in the newsletter and he often has very lovely pieces. It will be interesting to see if this piece is paid for or if it is relisted in a week or two.
Thanks for the warning, Giovanni!
Birgit
This is now £1,700 having been bid up by more 0 rated buyers except the current leader who has 61.
Interestingly, it says reserve met. It does surprise me that a simple 19th c pot might have a reserve, which implies the seller thinks it is something special but possibly covering himself by saying 19th c.
Wow GBP 11,100.
Some people have far too much money to burn. Just goes to show the stupity of some who literally get carried away at auctions.
Great result for the seller. Hope the buyer pays up.
Shall watch and see.
Mark
Oh my goodness! I wish I knew what they were all thinking this was.
It was won by a zero rated ebayer. Very odd bidding. Why do some of the new buyers have that funny little icon after their names? You can see it if you click on the number of bidders, then on that bid history page, click on the person who won it. They don't all have that little thing but some do.
I also find it odd that bidders only appear once in the history. I know the history doesn’t show every bid placed, but you’d think that it would show some back and forth bidding? The person who won this only appears once in the list, his/her winnng bid.
It can’t really be called a ‘bidding history’, it’s just a list of people who have joined the auction? Even then, it doesn’t tell you WHEN they joined the auction.
Nic
It was a con or shill from the moment it came out. The best part was the entertainment value watching sheep get fleeced. Really. The online auction business might now just be tipping into the first stages of extinction. Who's going to bid like this over time. In the end nobody!
Best wishes all by the way.
