Dear Readers,
Despite the fact we don't often reply on any forum, we felt it necessary to at least let you know that we are aware of the issues mentioned above. We have a good relationship with Peter and Bidamount and we are doing our best to provide all you the best services we can give. For those who want to get in contact with Catawiki for really specific questions, I suggest to forward your contact details to Peter and we will make sure you will get an answer.
Please find below some generic answers on how the Catawiki auctions work. What do our experts do for buyers and is a buyer protected against Forgeries?
Every one of our auctions is carefully curated and made up of hand-picked objects by our in-house experts. With their vast knowledge and experience, each lot in our auctions is personally reviewed and selected based on its uniqueness, value and authenticity. This way, we can ensure each object you find on Catawiki is truly special.
What makes buying through Catawiki safe and secure?
Your payment will run through a very secure method of payment. We will ask the buyer to pay for the lot within three days after the auction on a secure account. We then inform the seller that the buyer has transferred the payment and ask him to ship the lot. The seller will receive payment shortly after shipping. If you have not received the lot within 10 days after paying the purchase price, we ask you to inform us so that your payment to the seller can be withheld.
Who are our in-house experts?
Our growing team of experts come from a range of different countries and backgrounds, however, have one thing in common; their passion for exceptional, unique objects. With years dedicated to gaining vast knowledge and experience, each of our experts are truly specialized in their fields.

I think you all should try to take the feedbacks and make the necessary improvements. I do like Catawiki, but I think improvements are needed. Does not need to involve Peter when we need to ask questions about items on YOUR site. Every time someone has a question, she or he needs to ask Peter to email you? Makes no sense to me.
Hi Huey:
At least we now know that someone is actually alive at Catawiki and capable of responding! However, as you point out, their reply is absurd. Why should Peter be responsible for answering my questions about the dimensions of an object up for auction on Catawiki ? Has Peter agreed to play the role of mediator between Catawiki and subscribers to bidamount.com? Their generic message certainly does nothing to allay my concerns about Catawiki. From what I read in their response, if I were to bid successfully on an item and not receive it after having paid for it, where is my protection if Catawiki's policy is not to respond to messages? Must I then ask Peter to write to them and will they reply to him? To my knowledge, Peter sent two messages to Catawiki "Management" about the issues I raised and got no response. I still think Catawiki sucks and I would not recommend taking the risk of doing any business with them.

(duplicate - I posted my response in the wrong thread)
Hi all:
I wanted to follow up in this thread on my problems with Catawiki (see above posts) since they apply to all of us. To summarize I found a couple of silver items on Catawiki, one of which was a genuine Wang Hing silver presentation cup, through the Catawiki section of bidamount.com. I did a bit of searching and found that the presentation cup was being offered by a seller in the UK as a Buy it Now item on eBay for $5,000 + and on 1stdibs for almost $6,000. The seller's email, telephone and address information were all provided on eBay in the posting for the silver goblet. The Catawiki Asian Art experts had offered sale estimates of about $1,100 to $1,400 on the silver goblet. The discrepancy struck me as puzzling. It seemed too good to be true and it was! I emailed the purported seller in the UK directly (he is a well-known and reputable silver dealer) and he informed me that the Catawiki sale was "illegitimate." I also wrote to Catawiki but they did not reply to me until today long after the auction was over.
I recall that the winning bid on the auction was about $1,400. I predicted in this forum that the buyer would never see the silver goblet and I was right. In her email to me today, the Catawiki Asian Art expert informed me that someone had "stolen" the photographs of the two silver items from the U.K. dealer's website, had opened a seller's account at Catawiki and had offered the items for auction apparently thinking or hoping that he/she would be able to collect the payment before the fraud was discovered.
She further informed me that Catawiki keeps credit card payments on auction items in a type of Escrow account until they have verification that a buyer has received the item at which time they make payment to the seller. This, however, is at variance with the stated policy on the Catawiki website of paying the seller when the item ships. I pointed out in my reply that this still does not offer adequate protection because a fraudulent seller posing as a genuine seller could easily ship an empty container and who would be responsible then?
I did not bid on these items because it was obvious to me that a fraud was being perpetrated. However, some unlucky bidders have paid for the items and I wonder how long it will take them to get their money refunded?
Also, the Asian Art expert told me that they will try to offer prompter responses to question from buyers. I still think that is inadequate because many questions such as those relating to dimensions and possible damage to items can only be answered by the seller. "Expert" opinions are only really needed when there are questions concerning the age of an item or whether it is real or a fake.
So I am pleased to have finally discovered what lay behind this messy situation and to have had my claims of fraud validated. I have done what I could do as an individual. However, Peter has a lot more clout than I do and I would hope he will hold Catawiki's feet to the fire if he is going to continue to have a Catawiki section on bidamount.com. Clearly, Catawiki is not screening potential sellers adequately if at all.
The two items were allegedly offered by a seller who even I could easily trace to a specific address in the UK because the goblet was so easily found using Google alone. The fraudulent seller had only offered these two items on Catawiki and had no prior auction history with them. Even the most basic screening process should have picked up the fraudulent nature of this auction and that the seller was posing as another person and did not have possession of the items. We really need to know how sellers on Catawiki are being screened before we can bid there with any confidence. We also need the same protections offered by eBay and PayPal namely one's money back if one does not receive an item or if the item is an obvious fake.
I would be interested to learn what other forum members think about this situation.
Regards,
Errol
Since my post above, I have had a further email from the Asian Art expert on Catawiki. She told me that a successful bidder's payment via credit card is held by Catawiki until such time as the buyer receives the item. The payment is then sent to the seller by Catawiki. She did not mention what proof Catawiki requires that a buyer has received an item. I would assume they use tracking with a requirement that the buyer's signature be obtained as proof of receipt of the item. If that is the case it does represent an improvement over the policy stated on the Catawiki website namely that the funds are released to the seller when the item ships.

I have bought at least 6 or 7 pieces on Catawiki. Most of them arrived within 2-3 weeks (some longer) for items shipped from Europe to US. There are sellers from the US as well, and their items arrived within a week. Most of the ones from Europe required me to sign for the package, and they all had tracking numbers.
As far as payment, if something takes longer than usual or the tracking number wont work, like the case of a vase I bought two weeks ago, I called and they "stopped" the payment to seller until I tell them the shipment has arrived by marking it as such on my order status or until the tracking status says so.
Hello Huey:
That is good to hear. It does provide a margin of safety for buyers for situations in which the tracking suddenly stops because of failure to scan items by the USPS which is often the case.

Errol
Hello,
In case you missed my comment in this week's video, we've added a contact box on the CATAWIKI Page which will send a direct message or inquiry to them from BIDAMOUNT. We're testing it, but should be working fine. While I am happy to send along to them messages sent to me directly from our users, this Contact Box, might be a better solution overall. (I at times also don't check my email for a day or two, or on weekends.)
Hopefully this will be a good step in the right direction.
Best Peter
Peter
Hello Peter:
Thanks for getting this done. If Christina and her colleagues respond quickly this should be very helpful!
Kind regards,
Errol
