I really like this vase but it is badly damaged. I think it’s been broken in half at some point, the crack goes all the way around the middle. But I keep on going back to it. Is it expensive considering the condition?
But one has to wonder why no one else has bought it!!!!

Dear Nic,
Seems a bit expensive to me. I am in Australia so don't know what things are bringing in other places, at nearly 25cm tall it is a respectable size i guess seems very narrow at the base in relation to it's height to my eye. I suppose as far as the damage is concerned it depends on whether you can live with it now and for how long, but if you decided in the future that you wanted to sell it would you recoup your money.
I am sure other here will give you better educated information on the actual merits or otherwise in relation to the vase it's self.
Cheers
Michael

You could try a very low offer - the price of £189 would be ok if it didn't have the damage/repair. I can understand the seller because these ribbed and fluted vases are quite rare.
In my opinion , the decoration is not top drawer qianlong export ware, and elements like the black 'swags' or borders are not very well done. Also the first photo may have been over-saturated to give the impression that the colours are very vibrant (?), the natural light photos look less impressive.

Hello Nic:
In a couple of the photographs this vase looks like a drunk who is about to keel over. The seller does not even seem to mention that. I suspect from its shape that it was once part of a garniture set. The photographs look odd to me. I think the vase is old but not Qianlong - it's more like a vase from the Guangxu reign. These things are a matter of individual taste and one's level of tolerance for damage. I myself would not consider a purchase of this type.
Regards,
Errol
Hello Michael:
I see your posts are appearing in triplicate again. It does take time for each post to appear. I found today that I got impatient and clicked post twice. However, if you do that you can immediately afterwards delete the duplicate posts.
Best regards,
Errol
Hello Erroll,
Thanks for that, I know a bad workman always blames his tools, my normal device is packed away due to my house move. I am using a very old lap top that has a touch pad that seems to have a mind of it's own. Better not do any on line bidding ! I know there is an old mouse around here somewhere just can't lay my hands on it.
Cheers
Michael
Dear Nic,
the quality seems rather low, and it doesn’t look Qianlong to me, not the foot, not the painting style. And it’s damaged. For 189 GBP you should find something better.
Greetings
Birgit

Just looked at the seller‘s other items. His prices are quite hefty for the damaged and mediocre articles he sells.
Birgit
Dear Michael, Tam, Errol and Birgit,
thanks for your observations. I also thought the price was too high. And yes, it does seem to be leaning in one photo. I don’t mind damage if I’m getting an £800 item for a quarter of the price, but from what I can gather, this vase wouldn’t be much more than £200 if it was perfect, in which case I think I’ll leave it.
Thanks for the advice, knowing what to pay is really difficult. So it’s good to have some level-headed guidance.
Nic
I think it's Qianlong, no doubt. The enamels are badly filled in the leaves. A little bit rough, but still ok.
£200 is too expensive for it's condition.

Thanks Xin, I feel much happier now it isn’t playing on my mind. Most of the vases I see that I like are over £3000 which I don’t feel ready to spend yet. I thought this may be a good alternative. But I think it is better to wait and get something better for my money.
Much appreciated
Nic
I know my pc is ancient but I really can't see the "all the way around" crack. That's worrying for me more than anything as I will likely miss something myself. The price is too high if damaged and the crack isn't mentioned. His other items as stated are too highly priced. Tells you all you need to know I think. Save your money for something better.
The listing does state ‘this is in a restored state’ or words to that effect. Better photos are available on request. That alone should’ve been a warning I suppose!
