All,
I purchased a vase overseas and it's packed and ready to go, but looking at the dimensions of the package, I feel a bit uneasy. The vase itself is about 37cm tall and 22cm at the widest. The package is 57x33x36 and 3.6kg; it is supposed to be double boxed. I'm just wondering if there's sufficient clearance/padding if, at the widest point, it's only got 11cm/2 or about 2.2 inches on either side with wrap and double-boxing combined. I've not bought a lot, but fortunately for me, the few larger pieces that I purchased in the past arrived intact and very well packaged. Do you think this seems like adequate padding, or should I (politely) request a bit more protection?
Hello,
I can't give you an answer about the specifics of the dimensions of the packing here (maybe someone can).
But in regards to the issue of bringing up careful packing with sellers, I asked this question in a thread here a while back and the response from the dealers was: it can't hurt. I have, in the past, tactfully noted to sellers that "my postal carrier can be rough on packages" and asked them to pack accordingly. Usually the response is helpful.
If it's a professional auction house you'd think that they will pack it very carefully, but I've heard horror stories. Do they have reviews? Sometimes that can answer your question about how carefully they back things.
Good luck! Let us know what happens.
Steve
Thanks, Steve. This is a forwarding service, so they're supposed to be "professional" and know what they're doing. But honestly, I think I've had the best experiences with individual sellers. Maybe they tend to over-compensate for their lack of expertise...which is a good thing.
Yes, I've experienced the overly-careful seller and the careless kind. Once I bought 7 Regency-era English dessert plates and they arrived in a wide box, stacked side-by-side. Ugh. 4 were broken.
Sounds like your shipper is being careful.
I pay more than my buyers pay for shipping if they are putting down over a couple hundred dollars for the item, so I can get the extra padding. I just dont want to lose my sale on a refund. Worth five or 10 extra dollars to me at that point.
Thanks for that perspective. When I buy an item, I consider the total cost (sometimes I pay equally or more the cost of shipping than the price of the item 🤣 ). In this case, I don't want to appear as though I'm doubting their professionalism or integrity by questioning the packaging, but 5 cm just seems a bit too scant for a vase that size. I'm not experienced in this regard, though, so I guess I will trust them and pray that things work out.
@singingteapot If I could I would insert a GIF related to "rolling the dice" because that's what it always is ordering this stuff from god knows who online. Some of the things I get in the mail have, lets just say, very very creative packaging involved. John
Creative packaging is often good, slapdash packaging isn't. What I find matters is that the box is solid, the item can't move and the packing between the item and the box is keeping the box rigid and the item cushioned.
I never mind people asking me to pack carefully and if the item has a long worrying journey, I send photos of how I packed it. It is a worry, though. I ordered something on ebay, it arrived in 4 pieces with no damage to the box. Inside was one piece of bubble wrap loosely over the piece , not even taped and a very inadequate amount of newspaper. I asked for a refund to cover the cost of glue, she said OK, never did it, just excuse after excuse. EBay told me to file a complaint and they paid me the whole amount. I said I only asked for 10 euros, should I return the rest to the seller and they said they had allowed her to keep the money as well! I think she filed a reciprocal complaint about me so I haven't even dared leave feedback.
Even though I got my money back, I was very dissatisfied with the process as the seller has learnt nothing from that just been indulged. So, yes there are sellers who don't know how to pack our understand customer service.
Sorry, what a waffle. I must have needed to get that off my chest. 😆
My goodness, Julia, that sounds like an awful experience. Receiving an item broken is bad enough, but to have to deal with such insensitivity makes it doubly bad (in fact, I think that's the worst part!). With antiques, a lot times it is not about the money/refund because the item may be irreplaceable. I remember my very first antique purchase was a set of ko-imari bowls - absolutely flawless condition, but one (the one at the bottom) arrived with a hairline crack. I was pretty devastated 😆 . The ironic thing is, the packaging was one of the most costly/professional I've encountered (bubble wrap, reinforced box, peanuts galore). On hindsignt, I feel bad about getting a prorated refund because the whole thing including shipping cost like $45...

I got a package today from Holland it was in 3 separate boxes. It took me 10 minutes to get at it bravo for protecting my investment.
Fortunately, this large vase arrived last week safe and intact! As expected, their idea of double-boxing was really quite literal, lol. I'm just glad it made it here. Thanks everyone.
