So I got an absolutely outstanding Longquan meiping with applied dragons in today that compares to the very best Longquan pieces on the market that I'm aware of and that leaves me with little doubt regarding authenticity. Potential value would be a million dollar or more. But unfortunately I can't find any Longquan meipings with dragons for reference when researching online.
The only clue I have is a mentioning of a meiping at Tokyo national museum in an essay regarding a Qianlong celadon meiping at Sotheby's. https://www.sothebys.com/en/articles/amid-waves-where-dragons-soar-a-magnificent-carved-meiping IF anyone here know of other examples of Longquan meipings with dragons for reference I would be very pleased.
Hello, Stuart. I'd prefer not to post any pictures of it. I know this can be disturbing but believe me - it is superb. Have you got a picture of the meiping at Tokyo national museum? I can't seem to find it on their website.
The highest estimate/price paid for a Longquan vase with applied dragons I'm aware of is this one at Sotheby's. https://alaintruong2014.wordpress.com/2014/09/23/an-exceptional-and-extremely-rare-celadon-applique-decorated-dragon-vase-yuan-dynasty/ It is noted in in the lot-essay that: "Longquan celadon vases decorated with applied dragons are very rare." The meiping I have beat that vase in overall quality/refinement of the decoration but no provenance is known. It is decorated with two four-clawed dragons in horizontal positions chasing the flaming pearl.
I am a little confused regarding your meiping. Do you consider it from t he Yuan or Ming periods? Found a Yuan jar with applied dragons pictured in “A Survey of Chinese Ceramics, Volume 3” by Lou Liang-yu.
I couldn’t find anything that matched your description in “Oriental Ceramics, Tokyo National Museum “ published by Kodansha.
The meiping I have probably dates to the Yuan dynasty or (less likely) the very early Ming dynasty.
And thanks for the picture of the 'guan' jar. Much appreciated. In the lot essay regarding the dragon vase at Sotheby's two Longquan 'guan' jars with applied dragons are mentioned:
"a guan with a three-clawed dragon, published in Zhongguo meishu quanji. Taoci [Complete series on Chinese art. Arts and crafts section: ceramics], vol. 3, Shanghai, 1988, pl. 55, and Wenwu, 1980, no. 9, pp. 90-91, where it is illustrated and discussed. Compare also a guan carved with a related motif of a four-clawed dragon, included in the exhibition Östasiatisk Keramik ur med. dr. Bo Ewerts samling, Röhsska Konstslöjdmuseet, Gothenburg, 1971, cat. no. 41, and sold in our London rooms, 24th July 1973, lot 56."
Not sure if the jar you posted is actually one of these or an entirely different jar?
Additionally I have a couple of pictures of pear-shaped vase with applied dragons which might be the one also mentioned in Sotheby's essay.
The meiping I have doesn't have waves like the pieces seen in this thread however. It has ruyi borders with lotus-petal lappets in the lower register and double ruyi-borders in the upper register.

I hope these are of some use ...
Whilst respecting you reluctance to post any images, this obviously makes it impossible to say anything regarding the authenticity of your meiping ...
May I asked where you acquired this piece from, and how it was describing?! ...
Stuart
Many thanks for the many additional pictures. I'm experiencing some technical problems here so it will take a while before I can post again. Thank you!
Interestingly there was a vase similar to the vase at The Museum Yamato Bunkakan sold at Sotheby's in 2019 which could also be called a meiping and which they had strongly underestimated even though the overall quality is really good. (They are not gonna get away with that if they want to sell my meiping.) http://www.alaintruong.com/archives/2019/11/29/37827323.html
Another one at Chiswick. Not nearly as good as the one at Sotheby's and smaller in size but still highly collectable and with a more reasonable estimate. Still left unsold though. https://www.chiswickauctions.co.uk/auction/lot/164-a-chinese-longquan-celadon-dragon-vase/?lot=134297&sd=1
The white glazed meiping at Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is Qingbai ware. There are quite a few similar examples sold at auction. Qingbai and Longquan celadons are actually closely related.
But now I found a Longquan meiping with incised decration of dragons and waves at the met. I guess I'll have to go to the library if I want to see a picture of the meiping at Tokyo National Museum.
This early Ming 14th-15th century Longquan double gourd came in with the mail a couple of days ago and it's very nice. I was afraid there would be discoloration formed in the firing but it was just plain dirt that could easily be removed. The color is also mućh better than on the pictures provided. Not as yellowish 'curry green' but overall more well-balanced slightly bluish celadon green. This was purchased for a bargain and is as far as I can tell authentic.
It was delivered together with a superb Song dynasty guan lobed bowl which was packed in a small old wooden box which was almost falling apart. I had seen that but soon forgotten so when I picked up the box with the bowl inside from a table the bottom fell off and the bowl broke into several pieces. I've been depressed for a couple of days because of that. It was however one of a couple of pieces acquired this year I'm not certain about regarding authenticity so I almost hope the bowl is fake now. And all in all I guess I should let the pleasure of having found a rare early Ming piece for a bargain outweigh the sorrow of having lost a fine piece potentially worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.(I just had another piece in that had been damaged in the shipping process - a good qingbai ewer.) Plus the joy of having acquired the superb Longquan dragon meiping for a good price. The meiping and the double gourd actually look really good when displayed together.
