By the way, he seems to have sold three identical plates with different descriptions (or three different plates with the same picture?) I would strongly mistrust this seller.
Birgit
Dear James and Shinigami,
You have exposed further reasons why everyone should be sceptical about this seller. Even so, I regret to say, his cinnabar box will doubtless do very well for him. Let's keep an eye on it and see what its final result is.
Alan
The two box are 100% same i have photographic memory no doubt
I'm sure there are two boxes, and he has used the original bukoski photo as bait for his sale of the copy. It's mind boggling that such a near exact copy could be made , but this would explain why it's being sold on ebay rather than through a reputable auction house. There is no way to see how this was made or carved just through the photos.
tam
Thank you to all above for your time and research that you have put into this item and the merits of the said seller.
It is now obvious that something ain't right in tobruk.
A special thanks to Alan, James and Shinigami for your detailed pictures information etc.
At the time of writing I think it is at about US$2350 or so with about 14 hours or so to go.
I shall not be bidding. As it now appears that there is something funny going on with this seller.
I can't thank you all enough. ?
Mark
This is fascinating. I can see exactly what James' means about the differences apparent in the bases. Great detective work - I really want to know what is going on.!
Am I understanding this correctly that people look to see what sells well at established, but not top ranked, auction houses, replicate the item and then send somewhere like Sotheby's either poor photos or photos lifted from the original auction site to get a genuine, positive response before posting the item on ebay with poor photos?
Julia
The box made $5,100.
Alan
Hi Julie,
Yes your assumption about this box and seller and the communication by email to Sotheby's point to that.
The seller did send me a copy of said email, and as Alan has already pointed out the valuation was ONLY based on said images.
What the box really looks remains a mystery.
Mark
Thanks. It just shows you cannot be careful enough purchasing things unseen, unhandled.
Julia
Quite so, you have to eyes in the back of your head, and sometimes even those extra eyes aren't enough to get you out of trouble!
Of course, in the case of this particular box, an alarm bell sounded right from the get-go: if it had really been so special, why wouldn't it have been sent to Sotheby's for sale, rather than eBay? Sotheby's could have achieved a far higher result for its consignor, had it been the real deal, but there's the point, maybe it wasn't.
Incidentally, when I wrote to the eBay seller of the box, he also told me he sells a lot of items with Sotheby's! So why didn't he sell this one with them as well?
None of it makes sense to me in terms of an honest transaction. Just as well you didn't bid, Mark.
Alan
Let me answer Your questions as I was the seller
1) The soapstone item is indeed made of soapstone. It was examined by Bonhams in person at 800 but they did not want to go less that 2000 on chinese sale.
The weight of soapstone was 900 GMS. Resin will not have thatweight and tone of color
Also to answer queries regarding the box and account
FYI- I WAS THE SELLER ON EBAY
1) Previous purchases were similar as you can see new account on ebay. I needed few review so I asked a friend
2) I have never showed the box to any auction yet. Only Sothebys got back and christies. I will take it next week as the buyer did not pay.
3) The piece is exactly same as bukowskis . I did email them but they wanted me to come in person.
4) Also, apologies I have a real bad phone and the images were different. The first image was done by a friend of mine when it arrived.
5) The box is very fine indeed and I rather not sell in ebay again. I beleive it is not the platform to sell finer items. Personally i think the box is 18th or 19th century due to the carving with marks added later.
I have attached some images I took today. Apologies gain . I am bad with technology.
Please note that my response is to add clarity rather than any intent of sale. I am going to just sell through an auction.
Will upload link when they accept it
Finally, I cannot justify why I did not take it yet to Sothebys. I just wanted quick cash since i only paid 300 Euros to old owner.
Also to put in the most polite way- few thousands would not really make a difference to me
Anyways I sell some items via catawiki. I am regular there. Dont forget to bid . Auction start on 27th Exclusive auction Asian
