Old Furniture has the advantage of being solid wood.

Horton Brasses replacement bolt covers, this console table is most likely 20s-40s, every house had one. Solid wood makes your collection look better than it is actually.

I had been searching for a simple old stand for months, one day a friend called me to tell me to go to a shop, they have what you want. In truth, I told her, "it will probably not be right," she replied, "just go now." I thought it would just be a nineteen twenties one. It was covered with several layers of paint, the single board top was split, but yes it was right. I called and told her she was right and she said, "see, I know a thing or two." It had been painted so many times, that it left me no other choice but to strip off the old paint layers. My husband removed the top for me and glued it back together with clamps to hold it while it dried. I was very happy. One corner of the top had a well-made corner repair.

Eastlake oak wash stand, previously posted Eastlake parlor table, Hints on Household Taste by Charles Eastlake was a fine read. I searched for months for a plain white English Ironstone Pitcher and Bowl, lilies of the valley handle. My sister said, "too bad you did not find a floral pattern one." I have an old family pitcher and bowl on a country oak wash stand upstairs by early Homer Laughlin with a fleur-de-lis pattern, the panels in the two doors were broken, so my college roommate worked with stained glass and made me two panels with a tulip pattern.

Old writing desk that has served as my nightstand. Replacement brasses, but not from Horton, my Aunt told me to go to a corner of the shop and choose some replacements.

Golden Oak library table that goes well with our 1901 Kansas City made oak dining table with five leaves, good for large gatherings. We received the dining table from husband's Grandparents, belonged to her family. Golden Oak was popular in the seventies because it reminded everyone of their Grandparents' houses. Notice my replacement handle on my teapot, it worked!

Even with modest pieces, being solid wood they are hardy. Sharon

Sharon, I so agree. It is a good thing for my budget (and for the space in my house) that I live nowhere near some of those east coast auction sites where beautiful old furniture goes for a song.

About eight years ago we had the good fortune to find two old six-plus foot tall mahogany corner cabinets with serpentine glass fronts, plus a small yew-wood chest, that we were able to have trucked from North Carolina to central Texas for a very reasonable cost. The seller lamented that too many people today just want the inexpensive throw-away stuff. I think she is out of business now.

Your old furniture shows off your collections well. Very nice!

Carol

@cashflowz If Peter's prediction turn's true, young people will once again turn to antiques instead of deriding it as "brown furniture." I don't know, if a generation makes a point of not buying a corkscrew and only buying screw cap or box wine, what hope is there? What is the finish like on yew wood, is it lighter like Scandanavian birch? French limed wood finish was popular in the twenties on French panelled rooms as well.

@sharonp My chest is a medium dark color, with nice grain. I'll take a photo as soon as I clear the stack of mail and books off the top. 😊
