That framed dish is probably Guangxu, and very likely mark and period. I have seen ones like this before. Done in a kind of Kangxi-like style. Always admired these types! Can't find the exact comp I am thinking of but found these similar ones.
@jg1133 That is a great comparitive piece - good eye! Although, I'm leaning towards the Kangxi period for the screen. The design of the wood is more in the taste of Ming.... Guangxu screens are often very pierced/carved (very Qing style). Also, the design is much simpler than the highly detailed M&P Guangxu example you posted, but the piling of light and dark blue is very pronounced.
Either case, it will be sold as soon as the first 3 people make it through the door.
I agree with you! I just realized that is why I couldn't find the comp - the one I saw was actually Kangxi. Either way it is an extremely nice one, but I agree with you that it is probably earlier. Here is the one I was thinking of with underglaze red. I am finding that most of the Guangxu pieces have rim borders, where the Kangxi examples do not. Very interesting stuff!
A BLUE AND WHITE AND COPPER-RED 'BIRD AND PEONY' PLATE (christies.com)
Got to the sale about mid-morning. Chatted a bit with the cashier and he said they had some campers at first opening. The two screens of interest to everyone flew out the door immediately along with just about everything else mentioned in this thread. Generally, prices were rather reasonable, but a lot of the Chinese Export things had damages. The Japanese Imari seemed to be in better shape. I bought a nice wooden stand for a Yen Yen vase in my collection.
Attached are photos of some items that looked interesting.
@william Well, you got something, so not a total loss. Sorry to hear, but not at all surprised. Looks like I'll have to ask around to see if I can find out who bought b&w plate table screen, and see if they'll let me get a better look at it.
The days of showing up later in the day to a good sale to snag a few overlooked treasures are no longer. There's just too much time available to analyze photos on estate sale websites, followed by a lot of dealers (like me) willing to stay overnight to be first in line.
@imperialfinegems It's 19th c. Korean, right?
@imperialfinegems It's 19th c. Korean, right?
Hi Tim,
Not sure.....at first glance I thought it might have been 19th C Japanese.
But it could be Korean. I don't know much about Korean furniture. Most I have seen have a lot of metal on them.
I like it very much. Just not the asking price.
Mark
@imperialfinegems I didn't even look at the price...yes, that seems high, but I have seen some really high results on Christie's for 19th c. Korean furniture (if that is what it is)... I, like you, don't know enoough about it that I'd be willing to pay such a price.
@william When you get the chance please show us your vase on the stand you purchased.
I heard the ivory screen sold for 18500 dollars at the estate sale.
@william Holy cow, William! What a fine looking phoenix tail vase... and decorated with a phoenix nonetheless!
Thanks…another Mike Vermeer purchase. The yellow glaze is applied directly onto the biscuit. Dragon on one side and phoenix on the other.
@william Thanks for sharing, it looks lovely and thanks too for telling us what you learned about the sale.
