The open work cloisonne box looks to be by a high end maker. But, the prize is the pierced ivory table screen inlaid with kingfisher feathers and mounted on what looks like a beautiful zitan carved base (Qianlong period). If the restriction on ivory was not in place, I'd be camped out at the door of this home already. Probably had a value in the $200k range at some point in time.
The ivory piece is outstanding.
If I lived in the USA and it wasn't expensive I would certainly buy it Just for the Pure pleasure.
Mark
@imperialfinegems if I wee to guess, likely will sell about $4-6k. Most everyone is aware that ivory has suffered due to trade restrictions, even in Texas.
Texas sales that reference ‘executives’ are usually very good sales to attend due to the number of retired oil executives who spent large sums of money on antiques during the mid century.
Unfortunately with this sale, the address was openly listed early on, so likely a group of dealers have already staked out their spot in line (yes… even 3-4 days in advance).
The table screen with.a circular blue & white plaque of bird and flowers has promise, too. Might actually be a small mark and period plate.
@lotusblack Take that back, Father's Day will be in June. 🤣 Rumpelstiltskin
@william I hope you have a chance to see the ivory screen and the b&white plate mounted into a screen (the wood also looks like zitan, but Ming style). Are you going for the monochrome tea sets?
Good luck!
@william While I don't recall you collect Japanese items, but the open work box is likely Namikawa....if marked and undamaged, could bring $80,000 at auction.
Here's a black ground version...

This is the mark you want to see...
It's a stunning cloisonne box that could be made by said master as posted by Tim.
Here is a more recent one from Bonhams NY 2020.
Overall it's a interesting sale. I hope members here get the opportunity to view/buy something.
The ivory screen despite the problem with ivory is absolutely stunning.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Mark, do you think the box you referenced was restored? The only Namikawa box I've ever had was about 1/4 the size of the box you reference, and had a hairline across the top, and I still got $3,000. Namikawa still sells for big bang at auction in New York, but it has to be perfect.
You guys got me checking flights to Houston. Lol
@lotusblack Well, this is just what they are showing on the posted sale... could be a lot more goodies there! The building, according to LoopNet, is 17,000 sq ft. Likely, they're not using the whole place for this one sale, but I'd bet there is a lot more than what's in the photos.
I'd go, but I'm beat. I just got back from NY late Thursday, and spent all weekend with my son & his family. I'm just worn out.
If I were to go.. .this is generally what I would do.
Make a reservation for a Uhual van at the nearest dealer to the airport. When you arrive, take a taxi to the Uhual, get yoru van, and head to a Walmart... pick up a good book, folding chair, cheap bucket (your future toilet), plastic bag (for you know what), Ensure protein shakes, bottled water, wet wipes/TP, and a pillow and blanket (about a $200 expense) - then head to the warehouse. Park. Take a photo of your van that shows you arrived first (in case any disputes arise), park your chair at the door of the warehouse, and sit & wait with your back against the door.
Once dealers are there, they usually start a list, then you can retreat to your van and sleep. But until then, I wouldn't give up your spot.
Sometime the cops arrive, but doubtful in a commercial area like that.
Good luck!
Hi Tim,
The example I posted may have not been in pristine condition. Unfortunately as the sale is over, I am unable to access condition reports etc.
His works are very hotly sought after today and command high prices. But not as high as you would know, from the peaks of Japanese prices.
Here is another one from Bonhams NY from 2021. Once again I am unable to access condition reports.
It's highly probable that the one currently on offer is by said artist. Whether or not it's signed is another matter as a large number were never signed etc. Which is problematic and certainly would impact heavily on the prices.
The reason why he/other masters never signed some of their masterpieces was simply a requirement from some of the larger retailers that insisted said works remain unsigned.
Why this was...... I do not know. Perhaps others may know the reasoning.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Thanks, Mark! Well, my guess is that they'll ask about $400 unless they know a lot about Japanese cloisonne, so still a good buying opportunity. As I recall, I think I paid $15 for my Namikawa box at a consignment shop.
