Hello John:
Thanks for your comments. I like your figures too - just quaint, quirky and cheerful and what more can one ask for than that? Thanks also for the fascinating link and the information contained in it and for the high-quality bamboo brush pots illustrated.
I have had a crash course in bamboo brush pots today and it's a very interesting topic. I really doubt though that I would be interested in paying $10,000 or more for a bamboo brush pot of museum quality even if one were available. Unlike antique Chinese porcelains that do not deteriorate much unless manhandled, bamboo, as Xin points out, does deteriorate when subject to ambient temperatures and humidity that are not ideal for bamboo. Also, I would not like to spend a few hours each week cuddling and pampering a bamboo brush pot. So I'm content with mine for the time being unless I see something much better and that is also affordable. How badly wrong can one go investing $100 in a folk art object that one likes as you point out? Unfortunately most of us cannot afford to have all museum quality Chinese antiques in our home. That sort of standard is unattainable. J.P. Morgan and the Rockerfellers did achieve that with their Chinese collections, but most of us are not in that category.

Errol

John
Hi Errol,
Yes, it's Q-tip.
All bamboo brush pots you have shown in this thread are Canton export products of late Qing. That means they are made for European markets, not Chinese market. And that's why they don't have the same quality as the traditional scholar brush pot. The prices people asking are way too high.

Xin

Thanks Xin for the helpful information. I'm pleased now to know that my brush pot is both real bamboo and late Qing in production date. I still think that I got a bargain if one compares it with the other bamboo brush pots with a similar color, carving design and size to mine that are being sold on 1stdibs and eBay for as much as 18 to 24 times the price I paid for mine. Also, the type of bamboo brush pot that you are referring to just does not seem available currently.

Errol
Hello All,
Just for no reason other than I would like to keep this thread going here some of the Asian wood and bamboo carvings I have collected over the years. They are just about to be packed up for our house move so thought would just take a quick snap. I have worked in the timber industry nearly all of my life and I do a little carving myself so have a keen interest in this thread.
Cheers
Michael
Thanks Michael good to have a member who knows about wood.
Tried to upload a bamboo bitong canton export signed/calligraphy that I bought last week or so for $28US along with other. Very similar to the post by Errol.
My phone not doing what I want. Very frustrated!

The buddha is most beautiful one here, even if it's broken. Could be an early Qing piece.

Dear Mark and Xin,
Thank you for your comments.
Mark hope your phone gets better.
Xin yes I know that little Buddha was one of the first wooden objects I brought. You are right he has been broken I suspect by a vandal stealing it from a temple he still has his original patina, however he has been happy living in his little pot since he came to stay with us.
Cheers
Michael
Will it come back ?
I own this large Wooden Buddha ,The base is separate and looks to be root . I would guess this is late Qing in date.
The main problems i find with these pieces is the change in climate can have devastating effects on the pieces .
Hi Carly,
Not sure why but this thread disappeared for a little while. Hope It will stay up. If you fill a small container filled with water close to wooden objects it can help stop splitting. I use a Tupperware box with a sealed lid with a few holes in the top with a wet sponge inside. This can help with a warm dry climate.
