Some modern pieces seem to be gaining traction and so I thought it might be interesting to start a thread to share some modern things that we have collected that we like, have questions about, etc. I found this little bowl this week. It seems quite modern, handpainted, fairly simple in design, and it's signed. Overall I just found it to be a pleasant little bowl and it cost very little, so it was an easy buy. I'd love to see other people's newer objects as well. Cheers! John
John, I like that bowl. It’s a modern interpretation of the dragon design and seems to be signed by the artist. Is it Japanese? I often think the Chinese should stop making fakes and copies and produce good contemporary items.
Birgit
@shinigami I like it too. I'm not sure if it is Japanese or Chinese, I just found it at a second hand store this week. I like that it is honestly being the modern piece that it is. It is a nice example of modern original work done with a connection to the traditional. I think I will keep it as part of my personal collection rather than sell it.
I love these honest, contemporary takes on old patterns. Paying respectful homage to the past! I'm not sure if it's Japanese or Chinese but I'd lean towards Japanese.
Here is a link to an upcoming Bonham's auction with several quality mid-20th C items included. It is nice to see them being recognized. It'll be interesting to see how they do.
Here is another newer piece I recently acquired that I like quite a bit. I'm curious to learn more about it. To me, it looks like it was done by a very skilled artist. I look forward to finding out who made it.
Here's another one. I think this might be from the 80's or 90's. It's the more mass produced type, but I still kind of like it. I've been meaning to look up the mark on gotheborg to date it, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
I like these vases, especially the one with the cicada. These are tomorrow’s antiques. Though myriads of items have been produced in the last decades it’s not that easy to find something nice. If you rule out anything printed and anything that’s made to deceive it’s not awfully much that’s left.
Birgit
I agree, I have been keeping a casual eye out for modest by attractive, hand-painted modern Chinese pieces, but have seen very little. I really like the cicada one, too and am looking forward to seeing the photos. May I please ask where you bought them, Justin?
There was a very nice Japanese vase at an auction the other day, it was fairly modern but very nicely done. Unfortunately, I had my eye on something else that was for sale later. I didn't manage to get that but could possibly have got the Japanese one which is a little irritating!
You can see my most recent purchase of a modern ceramic by Googling Cream Color Crackle Warrior Jar with Bronze Lid, except I purchased mine from the Habitat For Humanity Restore, when they sent out a email showing things available for purchase during the pandemic, all I had to do was call when I drove up and pop the trunk and they brought it out to the car and wrapped it in the blankets. The thing is huge and could serve as an office trash basket. It was only 45.00 and was perfect and they are still being sold for a much greater price. It gave me a safe ceramic fix before the vaccines were available. Wothpoint says they are no longer being manufactured, I don't know about that and since I am not a member, I have no idea what it is ctually sold for, another one availabe at a shop has a high price, but you can ask anything in a shop and leave bargain room. Sharon
P.S. my jar is 14" tall and 35" circumference at widest point
Very nice, I like the lid. The one I saw was priced at just under $400, I don't know how large it was but it sounds like yours was a bargain.
@julia I got it at Cheffin's! I went to the auction hoping to get a very rare Kangxi plate (it sold for about $5K USD with the premium) but saw these and just fell in love with them. It was worth the 4:45 am wake up! 🙂
I will share more pictures when they arrive - the main piece was actually the compressed vase, the artist of that one is a pretty well known artist in Jingdezhen and one of his vases is on view at the V&A, however his pieces still only sell in the few hundreds. This one was made for a exhibition in 1997.
Very excited!
