Hello All
Last year I treated myself to a couple of the volumes of the Longquan of the World books published by The Forbidden City Publishing House. In the preface it describes Longquan wares as having “lusterous jade-like celadon glazes” and is celebrated for being “green like jade, bright like a mirror, and with a sound like a chime stone”.
As I had set up to do some photographs of the necklace that I have been asking about, I thought that it may be an idea to photograph a piece of jade on a Song dynasty Longquan dish and so I have attached a photograph showing my small jade Sang Yang Kai Tai placed on my Song dynasty crackle glaze dish.

It is clear that I am not good at being able to tell jadeite from similar looking stone, but I am confident that my small group is nephrite jade. I hope that you find the comparison interesting.
Kind regards,
Jeremy

I have you showed your jade group here before? I searched 'Sang Yang Kai Tai' with google images and came across this one at Skinner.

I don't think that I have posted photographs of it on the forum before. It is quite a simpler style than other jade San Yang Kai Tai figures that I have seen.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Below are a couple of photographs of my jade San Yang Kai Tai. The three goats are eating lingzhi fronds. The facial features are very shallow carved and not easy to distinguish.

What amazes me is how the stone was carved with so many flaws and how it has survived in one piece.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Thanks for showing. I also have a carving wíth the same motive in a chicken bone material. Probably 19th century.

@avatar

You are probably correct about it being carved during the Qing period, although I did notice that a Yuan dynasty small jade horse figure sold by Christie's has very similar oval shaped, shallow carved eyes

I suppose that the style of carving continued through to the Qing period.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

And that the style of how the ears were carved are also similar

Although the carving is of a simple style, the total shape of the goat's bodies carries through to the underneath to show all of the legs

Hi Jeremy,

Well you certainly are keeping me on my toes. 😊

This particular carving is genuine nephrite and it's carved in the styling of Song/later period.

I did try and find a similar one to yours but once again I came up empty handed.

It could be as suggested by avatar to be 19th century.

It would nerd to be handled.

Mark

It ment that it was my own carving that is probably 19th century. Not the carving of Jeremy.

@imperialfinegems

Thank you Mark for looking. I have previously asked Peter about it and he thinks that it may have been carved during the Qing period. I know that it was originally in an old German collection, but I purchased it as I like the style of it.

Although it was polished all around, the carved hole was not polished and the small carved grooves are still evident, which I think is quite interesting.

Sorry that I misunderstood what you had meant.

I think that it is a piece of jade that may be considered as being an old carving by some people and others will consider it being a Qing carving. The main thing is that I like it's simplicity, yet I assume that the person who carved it must have been quite skilled to be able to take a stone with so many flaws and not only carve out a large part of the centre, but also carve the lingzhi fronds over the hole.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

@imperialfinegems @avatar

The nearest style of jade San Yang Kai Tai that I have been able to find is one that was sold by Bonhams, but I am not sure if there is sufficient similarity between that one and my group.

https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/25490/lot/103/

The way in which the ears were carved are obviously different. The ears on my San Yang Kai Tai are very similar in style to the ears on my jade Tianma.

Kind regards,

Jeremy
