Here are some I have collected. The first is modern, I think, but I haven't seen very many cloisonné pieces with figural scenes, so I like it.
These two 9.5" tall matched vases are very nice... Meiji?
Here are two Ginbari pieces--beautiful, but both damaged. As Robin says, almost impossible to find these undamaged.
Here is a pixiu (or a frog?) box (7" long) that I picked up a few months ago. Peter says it is late Qing. I love how many different colors there are!
Finally, here is a 15" vase that is a family piece. It is (in my opinion), by far the best. Subtle and very Japanese. It has some damage, but is in fair shape. After being in a humid climate for a very long time, the wires between the enamel areas have corroded badly... It is good enough that I would expect it to be signed, but no such luck...
Charles
@kirby13 you have a great collection and the frog steals the show. The figures I too have never seen they are rare. I would get second opinion on frog.
Very nice, Charles. Funny how we often sound almost apologetic for sharing or liking something modern; some modern pieces are excellent or just plain lovely! I think your vase is very nicely done and the figures make it quite desirable.
I like the frog-like creature, too, and I think Peter's opinion is correct. The colours are different compared to those of the earlier Qing period. I did wonder if it might be Japanese, but couldn't find anything comparable.
However, I did find this which was interesting to me and may be to others, too:
https://www.skinnerinc.com/news/blog/the-art-of-japanese-cloisonne/
Okay here is my cloisonne, the covered ginger jar was a going away gift from my pals in Jakarta in 92, it matched a piece that I already owned but can't remember where I bought it, maybe Hong Kong or Singapore, the blue reminded me of Wedgwood fairyland luster. The miniature was a party favor and I have no idea what the black and white at the bottom below the pink flower is supposed to be. The glass swirl enamel Japanese spider and regular lily vase is probably mid-century, which I probably overpaid at an antique shop, but I thought it had an arts and crafts look. My blue onion tablecloth that my late Mother-in-law embroidered as a gift to match my dishes, so about 1969. Sharon
I particularly like the one in the middle, Sharon and the tablecloth looks lovely. What a wonderful idea to do that; I feel quite inspired to try something similar - mind you, I haven't done any embroidery since school! Still, it might be fun to give it a go.
@julia I did quite a lot of needlepoint and embroidery in the seventies in the car pool. Luckily I can read and do needlework in the car, otherwise two hours would have been wasted in my day. I was asked to not grade papers, I was invading space, snippy teachers. Sharon
@short-dong that’s a impressive collection thanks for sharing.
I wanted to start a topic on Cloisonné. As the other topic was getting distracted from the main topic. I believe Chinese Cloisonné is a little more hype and Japanese Cloisonné is way more superior in my opinion. Please post your Cloisonné and any info. I’m going to start with what I believe is the highest quality and artistry Japanese Cloisonné of the late Meiji until the mid 19th century was the golden age for Japanese Cloisonné artwork and far better than any Chinese Cloisonné during this period do you agree?
This is a Ando Jubei Moriage wireless Cloisonné vase ca 1930
This is a very fine cloisonne, stunning and I was chuckling when Julia mentioned not liking Japanese Cloisonne in comparison to the earlier Chinese and or Meiji pieces, but then when you are searching for cloisonne at the back of your mind all the time and you see an artists peice then the quality really stands out.
The pieces i have on the Brown bookcase, there is another matching one out of picture, but when they are displayed properly with some brass vase's, in the right shade of light or ideally the shadows then they really look so japanese imperial and striking and exotic.
I admit it is very beautiful, but it just isn't the kind of thing I like best. 😊 Just to be clear, there is a lot of cloisonné I do not like and this beats those hands down, but there are many of this type that I find rather boring. Good job we aren't all the same!
- @short-dong thank you for the compliment. I am astonished at the prices auction houses are getting for Ando Jubei Moriage.

@julia The Skinner image you posted, the Vase in that image perfectly that i tried to explain. It has a strong statement. An imperial claim of power and imposing danger. Like it syas to me ' the Japs really mean serious business'.. I nonchalantly glanced up at the 4 Cloisonne vase's that were on the bookcase and in the darkness I could see this extravagant and lavish claim not of wealth but of superiority and power emanating from the design that melts like a rich wax in the shadows. Without offending anyone, Japan must have really taken it self seriously back in the day.
