I wanted to start a topic on Cloisonné. As the other topic was getting distracted from the main topic. I believe Chinese Cloisonné is a little more hype and Japanese Cloisonné is way more superior in my opinion. Please post your Cloisonné and any info. I’m going to start with what I believe is the highest quality and artistry Japanese Cloisonné of the late Meiji until the mid 19th century was the golden age for Japanese Cloisonné artwork and far better than any Chinese Cloisonné during this period do you agree?
This is a Ando Jubei Moriage wireless Cloisonné vase ca 1930
I think Japanese cloisonné of the type you have shown is undoubtedly well-made, elegant, fairly easily identified too, which helps, but I simply am not drawn to that kind of work in the same way as I am to earlier Chinese pieces or the kind of Meiji work like the vase and bowl you posted in the other thread.
I am not sure why that is, maybe this type of flower-decorated vase lacks a sense of age and mystery.
I prefer antique and vintage pieces personally. Nevertheless, there is some outstanding work from the late 19th to early 20th C. Japanese cloisonee that looks like it was made yesterday. Here is my best pair of Japanese Meiji cloisonee. I can get better photos if necessary after the sun comes up. Pictures were taken indoors, in a hurry, and with poor lighting. The pair is really exquisite. Much better quality than late Qing cloisonee imo. Sincerely, JT
@loveli4236 Very nice vases! But, would you be surprised if I told you they are in fact French?
There are a couple of artists in France during the art deco period of the early 20th c. that mastered cloisonne to the degree that the work is often indistinguishable from materials from Japan and China. However, the style is always very art deco, with fish and geometric designs as the most popular motifs.
Someone is selling a vase that looks quite similar to yours and is attributing the word to Maison Paul Lauchet.
Another artist, who I like very much, is Fabienne Jouvin. Here are two examples, one attributed incorrectly as Meiji Japanese, the other correctly identified as Jouvin. A month ago I saw a large lionfish vase that was lamped, but I hesitated, and as the story goes....when I returned to buy it the next day it was already sold.

This is fabulous I had no ideal about French Cloisonné and the works are amazing. I wonder how many different style of Cloisonné exist?
@julia Russia indeed has some treasures in the form of cloisonné..
Truly breathtaking pieces!
As per the original prompt asked (and with a very nice Ando piece)..
While I clearly won’t set down my love for Japanese Meiji/Taishō (and later) cloisonné/shippo any time soon; I do feel Chinese cloisonné should not be discounted - nor viewed in the same light of critique.
Did Japan “redefine” cloisonné during the arrival of the 20th century?Absolutely, no doubt!
Yet (much like many great works of Japanese acclaim), we have to give credit to the roots of which it was derived from originally..
Without the great cloisonné of the Ming dynasty, and the mesmerizing styles produced during the Qing (innovative and cutting-edge in their own times) - Japanese cloisonné would have undoubtedly struggled to find its early foundations, and inspiration leading to where it would later reach.
Chinese works of enamel offer some beautifully obtainable pieces at (comparatively to other mediums) very modest prices, and are still heavily overlooked (in my personal opinion).. offering the everyday collector an opportunity to grab something “exquisite” in its own way!
Best,
-JRN
Dear all,
I´d like to show you a small collection of Japanese cloisonne. The vase with the birds and bamboo is one of the finest I have seen so far (only 18 cm tall) and luckily I was able to acquire it.
To me this field of collecting is a appealing because a) undamaged vases in high quality are just perfectly made by any means and b) it requires a good hunt to find nice undamaged pieces (especially ginbari).
Regards
Robin
Here are the only cloisonné we own, a basic Japanese vase, a Chinese vase and a set of salts, most probably Japanese.
The first vase I bought as Chinese probably paid to much for but I liked the intricate detailing and the shading of the colours. It is obvious it was hand made, all the wire work is different. I have no idea of its age but it is of a quality above the average.
The little salts I believe to be Japanese, the detailing is not the greatest so don’t suspect it to have been an expensive set when new, as to age I have no idea. The traditionally styled Japanese vase it very typical for the style but can only best be described as vintage.

Sorry for the less than perfect images, using iPad camera.
I like the little Japanese pots and the dragon vase is a nice example with the green background. Mine similar jar is the more typical brown. I can't really see the other but it looks attractive and as you say, typically Japanese.
I just bought these. For some reason I tend to like these trinket dishes. They are very affordable and sometimes have rather lovely designs. I have wondered if there is information that talks about the history of them, when they started being made, etc?
