@ nmh

Hi Michael -

Two of my best books are:-

‘Oriental Blue and White’,3rd addition 1970 by Sir Harry Garner, which still contains one of the best chapters on ‘dating snd attribution ever written ...

‘Yuan and Ming Blue and White Ware from Jiangxi’, 2002 exhibition catalogue. A mixture of Imperial and minyao wares, some recovered from datable tombs, the images of which show the progression in painting styles from differing periods ...

I have just acquired the Gugong ‘Gu Taoci Ziliao Xuan Cui’ 2005 publication, 2 voll’s. This contains the broken pieces the Palace collection, both Imperial and minyao wares, many of which have old stapled repairs. The attributed dating within is somewhat inaccurate - since corrected in subsequent publications - but some of the pieces are extremely rare. A friend in Hong Kong meet the team that produced this set, they told him it ‘took six months just to clean the thick dust of the surface’!!

@imperialfinegems

Hi Mark,

Anthony Allen has a wonderful library which contains some rare, and long out of print, publications!!

Hope the postage quotes are reasonable. Best of luck if deciding to bid ...

HELP

Hi,

Hope someone notices that.  I am having problems, again.  I keep getting asked to log-in or register even when I was logged in when I opened the topic.  The page is now looking fine the funny headers I had the other day have gone, but very often there are no "like" or "reply" buttons and when I tried t start a thread about this, there was no option to do so or anywhere to log-in in case that was the reason.

I hope that makes sense?  Not sure what is going on.

Julia

I love this topic! Wish I had more bookshelves.

I splurged and found the 2010 Chinese Ceramics book earlier this year at a reasonable price and enjoy perusing it and the beautiful illustrations.

 I also find A Connoisseur's Guide to Chinese Pottery very helpful as a source, especially their tables of information and catalogues of design motifs, marks, etc. (And you can find a copy cheap and, yes, it's just over 50 years old.)

No book is complete enough, however, especially for export ware. The Kerr & Mengoni Chinese Export Ceramics is too skimpy, IMO.

Webbs auction update.

According to their website/auction T&C Webbs do not provide a shipping service. Said packing to be provided by way of third party namely packnsend. These packers are well-known but are very highly priced etc.

Oddly enough I did receive an email reply from Webbs this day contradicting these terms. Hence offering in-house shipping. In accordance I have asked for clarification and certainty.

I shall post said reply in due course.

@steve

I got the Chinese Ceramics from the Paleolithic through the Qing book. It weighs about 30 lbs and is very thorough providing historical context. Any ideas for a beginners book?

@kevinw

Yes, that's a monster sized book, isn't it?

Chinese Porcelain by Anthony du Boulay is good: dated, yes (1963) but on the short side and direct, well illustrated. That's my only suggestion off the top of my head. Would be nice to find a more current introduction.
