Hello, I just finished this beauty of a book, great learning piece !
What is your latest great Asian Antiques book or other learning experience ? Hope I can get inspired to buy some new books.
Kind regards
Michael
@Michael,
Hi Michael,
Innovations and creations is a superb book on Republic period porcelain and early PROC. I bought mine a few months via biblio. It's a fairly difficult book to find at a reasonable price. If you don't mind me asking on how much you paid for your copy?
If you like and or are seriously considering buying republic period porcelain then in addition to this book I highly recommend Simon Kwan Chinese porcelain of the republic period. It's a must. Copies are still available in Hong Kong. Some copies are available on eBay but at inflated prices.
I use mine regularly etc.
Mark
Mark, I thin I paid 14,74 pounds with shipping, shipping was 2,68 pounds trough bookdepository, but the book was purchased from amazon.uk. Maybe amazon.uk has a contract with bookdepository. Indeed "Innovations and creations" is a great book ! I will look up the Simon Kwan book.
Kind regards
Michael
Hi Michael and Mark, I have the same book but haven’t found the time to read it yet. Paid €16 for it, also over bookdepository, if I remember correctly.
What I can recommend for Chinese porcelain in general are the books of Anthony Allen, especially „The detection of fakes“. And of course the faces book by Tommy Eklöf.
Birgit
The Tommy Eklof book is next on my list. 📖😊
I think I paid about 12usd plus about $17 shipping and handling to Australia.
I know there are a few copies via biblio and eBay but the prices are in excess of $200usd.
Michaela from watersilkdragon has a recommendation of 10 books that deal primarily with republican period porcelain.

The most r(ecent was the first American edition of Later Chinese Porcelain by Soame Jenyns, I think it cost me about 70 U.S., I am slowly reading that when I am not reading Jo Nesbo's Macbeth in the Hogarth Shakespeare series, also read Anne Tyler's Vinegar Girl (retelling of Taming of the Shrew) in the same series and a Barbara Pym novel and others. I culled my bookshelves for other Asian titles, which resulted in a three volume set of Pageant of Japanese Art (ceramics, sculpture, textiles & laquer), published by Toto Shuppan Company, LTD. TOKYO, Japan, Aspects of Indonesian Culture, Java -Sumatra published by the Ganesha Society, Papua New Guinea by Roy D. Mackay, The Sacred Mountains of Asia, Edited by John Einarsen, Java Island of Antiquities by J. David Day, Indonesia in Color photography and text by Kal Muller, Islands of Fire, Islands of Spice Exploring the Wild Places of Indonesia, by Richard Bangs and Christian Kallen, Batik Design byPepin Van Roojen, The Forbidden City, published 1985, One for the Price of Two retold by Chnthia Jameson of Japanese tale, pictures by Anita Lobel, Parent's Magazine Press 1972, a lovely storybook, Year of the Horse by Nigel Suckling, calligraphy by Lifen Zhang 2002 Singapore, Ceramic Traditions of South-East Asia by John Guy, Oxford University Press. Last night I found a box of books I had ordered on my front porch, oh happy day. One was A Note of Explanation, by Vita Sackville-West, a beautiful book published by the Royal Collection Trust, a little tale of secrets and enchantment from Queen Mary's Dools' House library, illustrated by Kate Baylay, afterwood by Matthew Dennison, ordered from Daedalus Books, still in the Shrink wrap, one of the highlights of my trip was a visit to Knole, ancient seat of the Sacksvilles in Kent (I know, some people say horrible family, but I do know it was horrible that Vita did not inherit because she was female when the estate was not entailed to the male line, oh well, perhaps her Pa had other reasons. I do know there was a whole other level of horror when I recently read that the estate was not entailed to the male line, don't you just love English law? You go Gloucestershire for not holding solely to primogeniture in the good (?) old days).
P.S. I wish I could get the edit to work on this device, as I am sure you do as well. It is Queen Mary's Dolls' House and more than you wish to know about Vita.
Hi Sharon P,
Have you tried using a different device and seeing if the editing button works?
Mark
@imperialfinegems hurrah the reply button just worked, so now since that worked maybe the edit will as well, yes it works on the home computer but I prefer this tablet. The edit just worked as well, fantastic. Sharon
Webbs auction in auckland New Zealand are having a sale on 19th September. The auction is the private collection/reference material of renouned author Anthony J Allen.
There are some truly remarkable and hard to get editions including these :-
Mark
What a wealth of great books! A good chance to buy for someone who lives in the area, though overseas shipping would be too expensive. There are even the rare Topkapi sarai volumes on offer.
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
No he is still alive but apparently very sick. That's probably why he is selling his collection etc.
I dont know him personally. He lives in New Zealand. Peter I think knows him well. He did have a shop many years ago.
If the shipping is reasonable I will definitely try and buy some of his books. They are fantastic references etc. Might even have a go at the Simon Kwan book as it's the original. Like you I have the new edition that's cheap to buy in Hong Kong ($880 hkd?) but not for much longer as there were only a limited amount printed. I think from memory 1000 copies. Not reprinted but actually re-edit.
Actually not sure why he is selling via that auction site. Had a quick look at their last sale where most items were passed for what ever reason. I think he should have sold via eBay. But perhaps because he is ill he can't be bothered.
I will probably in the next week or two buy his latest copy of detection of fakes as there are only a few copies left.
Unfortunately I don't know anyone in New Zealand who can help me etc etc.
Mark

Hi Michael -
Two of my best books are:-
‘Oriental Blue and White’,3rd addition 1970 by Sir Harry Garner, which still contains one of the best chapters on ‘dating snd attribution ever written ...
‘Yuan and Ming Blue and White Ware from Jiangxi’, 2002 exhibition catalogue. A mixture of Imperial and minyao wares, some recovered from datable tombs, the images of which show the progression in painting styles from differing periods ...
I have just acquired the Gugong ‘Gu Taoci Ziliao Xuan Cui’ 2005 publication, 2 voll’s. This contains the broken pieces the Palace collection, both Imperial and minyao wares, many of which have old stapled repairs. The attributed dating within is somewhat inaccurate - since corrected in subsequent publications - but some of the pieces are extremely rare. A friend in Hong Kong meet the team that produced this set, they told him it ‘took six months just to clean the thick dust of the surface’!!

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink.
