Bought this on Ebay a few days ago, its in the mail. But I won’t get my hands on it until next month when I visit the states. Its 21 inches, quite a big one. It has a significant crack. My plan is to get it restored. The choices being a mostly invisible repair or a gold repair. In this case I am leaning heavily towards the former. I read that collectors prefer(in general) invisible repairs, while museums prefer visible. The front of the dish is so nice, it would seem to me that the value would be hurt by an obvious, visible repair.
So, my question is would it be worth repairing. The repair could be...guessing $200? Maybe less. I can drive to the shop, so only gas money is involved, no shipping charges back and forth. It was sold as 19th century, but I think its 18th, going by the back of the piece mostly. Does this seem right? My research says it could be worth quite a bit more and thus worth repairing. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Todd

Dear Todd,
What a wonderful Charger. I read something about that oxo border type decoration on the back fairly recently I can't recall where i saw it. I will dredge the memory and go all through my recent links. I wish I had a better screen to see the plate more closely in detail to gauge the age.
As far as repair is concerned as far as I can see there are no missing bits. It may well glue back together with modern adhesive so you can't see it and may need very little filling. Depending how wide the gaps are of course I think gold would look good on that Charger.
Good find
Cheers
Michael
It's a beautiful charger! While I can't accurately speak to it's value in that condition I can speak to pricing on restoration.
In New York, a very good invisible repair is going to run you quite a bit more than $200 on something that size. I can't speak to where you are or know the quality of work your local restorer but you may consider pricing a few different options out before settling in on your plan. A very very good invisible repair may cost you almost what your item is worth.
Hi Michael,
I’ve seen the xox pattern before also. It is usually on older pieces I believe. But that is, I’m sure, not an ironclad rule. I’m leaning towards an invisible repair rather than a gold one, but not sure yet. Will get the opinion of the restorer also before I decide. Thanks as always for your time.

Hi Yrguide,
Yes, you make a good point. It all depends on how much it will be worth after a restoration. I’ve seen chargers of the same size go for thousands of dollars. But are they comparable? Each one is a one-off, so it is not a simple thing to find a value. It depends on the quality of the artist’s work. I don’t have the experience to compare them and declare that this one is of similar quality or not. And then there is the fact that for a piece with a restoration, the value is less, even if the restoration is near perfect. So, these are the factors I must weigh. Hopefully I won’t take it completely on the chin ?
Best, Todd

Hi Todd - very nice piece. As for what restoration to consider, is this for your own collection or to sell on?!? It very much depends on what you wish to do with the piece, but I would agree with Yrguide re possible pricing, over here in the UK restoration costs would be rather more then $200(£155) for something of this size! Hope it all works out OK for you!
Hi Ming,
The ultimate plan would be to sell it, but probably not right away. I will wait a few years, maybe more, until the time is right regarding Japanese antiques. My estimation on the cost seems to be quite too low. I will repost once I get a quote, just to let everyone know the cost. That will be in about two months.

Well, I had it shipped to my Dad’s house in New York, and apparently its completely destroyed. “In six pieces with lots of shards, a complete mess”. Makes you want to quit Ebay.

The color differences between the pictures is significant. Amazing how different lighting can change the look of a piece. To get this repaired now would cost a fortune I presume. I already requested a return.

That is annoying. As for the differences, it doesn't look the same plate!
Good luck - hope it is all hassle-free.
I’m so sorry Todd. It’s awful when this happens. I’m still in the process of gluing this back together.
25 pieces. Absolute nightmare.
Get that refund!
Nic
Hi Todd - very sorry to hear/see this, very upsetting not to mention annoying when such accrues. Fingers cross all goes well with the return claim!!
Stuart
Is there a new break, if it is just the old breaks then you might make it a project and re-glue it yourself. Was the parcel inadequate for shipping. I mean was this a tragedy or an act of negligence.
Hi Julia, yes it looks so different. Thanks.
Hi Nic, thanks. 25 pieces, wow. What a mess. Good luck.
Hi Stuart, thanks. Return already accepted, so no big hassle, just the disappointment.
Hi Short, quite a few brand new breaks. It was inadequately packaged. Crossed my mind to keep it, was $126 including shipping, so not a fortune. But I think it would bother me every time I looked at it, so best to just forget it.

Todd,
Glad to hear it has worked out. I bet you pack the bits better than they packed the plate.
