Birds were always a popular subject on Chinese porcelain. On old pieces you find them rendered in a way that shows close observation often combined with a sense of humor. This is valid for animals in general. If they are stiff, lifeless, uninteresting or "cute", the item is most likely modern. I'd like to show you some examples of "old" birds. The age is found in the top left corner if you click on the pictures.

nice collection! I am impressed by the Jin double box shaped as ducks; what a nice piece! Museum grade.
And I like very much the Han rooster.
I am showing here a small Ming dish that I have. I like it for the vitality of the birds, it seems to hear them singing when I look at it!

A lovely plate, Giovanni! You’re right, you almost hear them sing. The old Chinese could catch the characteristics of an animal with just a few strokes.

Is that chicken Chinese or Japanese I wonder. I certainly had their feathers ruffled on the other page for a while until xin raised an eyebrow. I did have some fun there for a while ?

which chicken do you think that it could be Japanese? Nothing Japanese there. The famille verte yenyen vase with the phoenixes is Kangxi, then we have a male and a female peacocks on a Qianlong dish, then the single big peacock and the two roosters are on two Yongzheng chargers.
Sorry but I have not understood what you mean with reference to Xin. Can you be more precise?
Dear Mark, I know you are a passionate expert on jades, something that I don’t buy because I have no specific knowledge (probably the more dangerous field in Chinese art!).

The decoration of magpies on porcelain and other is according to S.Bernstein jade a sign of joy and happiness along with marriage, children and happy household.
In ancient China the arrival of black birds was viewed as auspicious omen of new opportunity be it a new love/employment etc.
They are also used extensively in feng shui to cure and or to help remove or alleviate ones position.
Giovanni the Japanese ref I made is a joke that I started on another thread where I questioned whether the plate was Japanese or Chinese. So please don't worry about it.
