@jbeer2121 I also feel that the quality level becomes more and more of a focus for me as I go along. Another aspect of that is how certain really high quality pieces aren't as valued as they probably should be, which I find baffling, such as with the Kutani masterpieces and certain very fine export wares for example. Quality should win out, but that isn't always the case - the market can be a weird thing.
Welcome back, Tim! Looking good! What's the story behind that vase?
We've missed you here on the forum. I hope you've found more high-quality Kutani in addition to your lucrative finds! Can't wait to see some photos 😀
John
I agree about quality and there are types that are woefully undervalued; that's good for me for some of the pieces I've been able to acquire for what I think is a fraction of their worth. Every day I get pleasure from admiring the craftmanship, which is really what I love most about antiques.
I’ve been building a website that addresses the undervalued questions tracking and statistics of fine arts. I believe the biggest issue is the market is to centralize and needs to become more decentralized. Another issue my website will address is the value of virtual property related to physical fine art objects people are way to free with photos and lacking in physical presentation on an item. If an item is extremely rare the virtual property is just as important as the physical asset. My site will allow owners to own both the virtual and physical asset in a decentralized environment. I know this sounds silly but one day our environment with become more digital VR marketing etc. Wouldn’t be nice to know your property will be yours but if you want to sell an asset or keep making money on it you still own the rights it’s like land in America you can own the land but someone else can own the mineral rights or you can own both and lease the mineral rights but keep the land.
@lotusblack Interesting. So do you mean a person would get royalties on future NFT sales for a piece they physically sell? I'm curious to hear more about your idea.
Do you mean NFT as in crypto? But yes and or lease or copyrights of both physical and virtual.
Non fungible token, as here is a picture of a painting I will sell to you. Not so hip that I would part with real money. Land in America is tangible and mineral rights only benefit if a drilling company finds minerals. Left brain needs to meet right brain.
P.S. The fashion world is also experimenting with NFT, so not only artists trying to sell NFT, but then fashion is also art. I have some mineral rights from a Great-Grandfather, they have done me about as much good as a NFT would. I think NFT must be performance art, it's very bizarre, blockchain might end with ball and chain.
@sharonp there are a few bitcoin millionaires that would disagree. I actually made a lot of money when I embedded bitcoin fifteen years ago into my paintings I sold. Fifteen years later the painting is worth $30000 to whom bought it.
On one other note I’m not talking NFT that’s really at the end of the day an encrypted url file. I’m talking more of a page encryption that allows the rights of the physical or virtual to be determined by the owner.
@lotusblack I am not particularly clairvoyant but I do foresee lots of future employment to my brethren, just trying to figure out if virtual property, whether NFT or not will fall under intellectual property or other property law. I never practiced dirt law (real property) but NFT is about as clear as mud and let's not even get started on future interest in virtual property, the mind boggles. It is a free market and if someone wants to pay for virtual world property, rather than tangible property or both, which seems redundant, like a surcharge, then so be it. There might be a jurisdictional issue with virtual world, best left to the law professors and judges to sort out, I've seen a few who reminded me of the demon statue that someone posted recently. I look forward to reading about your ideas concerning virtual property.
I suppose virtual property is worth what people will pay for it. Beyond that, I think I'm too old to see any value.
Here is one of my virtual items that was created totally virtual. I can sell this anywhere at anytime globally with any currency it’s been decentralized.
@steve LOL!
Yes, as a matter of fact, the vase had a large bouquet of fake flowers in it.
This is the 2nd of two large vases I bought that are going to Christie’s for the fall - sadly, both are without reign marks (so no million dollars) but should perform very well nevertheless.
Here’s the other!
Tim
