Hey Folks,

Thought I would update my older post about the Islamic market collection I have been putting together.  This pattern somehow speaks to me, and the evolution of it is crazy interesting.

I have to thank John ( @bartholin ) for his assistance, as he texts me every piece of this pattern that turns up, and his extraordinarily kind gift which I received in the mail yesterday, a Persian made charger that the Chinese based this pattern off of.  It is possibly the best gift I have ever received, as a genuine ceramics nerd. The tankard is a piece that he texted me too, and I don't think he or I noticed before I bought it, but the cartouches are in brown, making it a very interesting variation of the pattern.  I would put the date of the tankard, due to quality, and the foot in line with the start of the pattern in 1810 or so, also the smaller plate of the three.  The Persian example likely dates just prior to all of these.

Anyways, I haven't had nearly enough coffee to write an informed post right now, but felt this morning that I should post it.

Hope you enjoy,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

They're stunning! Congratulations! The larger piece is the Persian charger?

Regards,

Steve

@steve

Steve,

Thank you!  Yes the largest plate is the Persian one.  They appear to use very thin enamels, I find it quite interesting, since the Chinese used such thick, rich enamels, I suspect the Persians who saw the these probably were as captivated as I am.

How beautiful! I have never seen these on the market, they must be quite rare.

Those are lovely; I have never seen them, either.  So the middle one is Persian? If I had seen it, I would have thought it was French, at least at first glance.

Is it possible to compare the backs of them, please.

@shinigami

I don't know if its rare for the overall pattern, but higher quality examples are seemingly hard to find.  It really is a stunning pattern, I want a whole place settings worth... I can only imagine, dream, of a table at a palace decorated fully in this.

@steve

It appears to be almost a terracotta, I havent cleaned it yet, there are some chips, clay based for certain.

@julia

Here Julia,

Thought i had posted it... oops!

The one with the sticker is Persian.  I agree I would have thought French or French market, but the two Chinese ones are very clearly so, and the tankard may be French market as that pattern seems to have been popular there too, I suppose similar to the Moroccan style in the Art Nouveau/ Art Deco era in Paris.   The Persian foot is glazed over, cant see the paste unfortunately.

The back is different to the faience de l'Est type plate that the front reminds me of.  I find the first photo interesting as it seems to have similar paste to some things I keep meaning to ask Peter about.

@julia Me too, the pattern would be at home with St. Armand French faience, I love the folk pattern and wonder if they could have copied the Persian? Iznik?

@julia That makes me happy to think of a French country style fan in China, ceramic fanciers without borders, except folk painted ones.

It is a nice thought, Sharon. 😊

Jeremy, I can't stop looking at your lovely collection. I just love the mug! I feel I need to own something like that, at least for a while. I had my eye on a bowl, similar but not as nice as the one you posted last time; it is a good price, but it has a hairline which may be more of a crack so I haven't succumbed - yet!

@julia

Julia,

contact me I will post it to you...  I would think the enjoyment one gains from collecting is triumphed by the enjoyment we see in others collecting....

This pattern mesmerizes me.  I would think it captures others.

I hope your shipment goes well.

Cheers,

Jeremy
