This is what's on my mind today, according to Peter's video Chinese export to the United States 18th and 19th century is plentiful on the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S.A. and since the Chinese are not interested in it, you do not have to worry about the Chinese faking it. They are also not interested in faking provincial kiln items, et voila, two areas to collect without worrying about being taken to the cleaners by some crooks. If you like to collect for the age of the piece there is no problem, if however, it is the aesthetics of the piece, you might have a problem, although I find the Fitzhugh pattern very pleasing to my provincial eye. Interesting discussions recently regarding the purpose of this forum, be assured there is no contract between you and an auction house unless you enter one by offer and acceptance. You are free to give your opinion without worrying about interference, although you may want to CYA with IMO, because there are litigious folk out there, although loser pay statutes, a blessing to our backed up courts, may limit frivolous lawsuits of the future. Still the best legal advice for a happy life, "stay out of court." Read Bleak House instead and save yourself misery and money.
P. S. Japanese geisha girl pattern porcelain is also plentiful and popular in the United states, especially in the twenties. I have bought so much of that over the years because my old college roommate collect's it starting with a chocolate set from her Grandmother. I get to keep one piece of it, because I received it from a relative and I was taught that it is rude to give away a gift. It is pretty and plentiful and not being faked by the Chinese as far as I know. It would be the height of irony if Chinese buyers had to shell out for Chinese fakes, that is one way to redistribute wealth to the masses.

I really enjoy collecting 18th/19th c. blue and white export for the same reasons. They're a steal right now and reasonable enough that I don't feel bad using them. I love the way they look good with my moonstone Heath plates for casual dinners and also for more special occasions; they have soul.

Unfortunately there are fakes of everything , inc (and increasingly) C18th export wares , famille rose and blue and white ;
and the rustic domestic wares are still being produced , not as fakes but just in the same type of kilns as ever, and with the same effects (glazes, footrims, kiln grit). There have been discussions here before about large ginger jars which look almost the same whether made in C19th, republic or recently.
The current thread about the rustic 'inkwells' shows also the type of thing that could be one hundred or ten years old.
Fitzhugh pattern is generally thought of as high end export ware, and commands a premium esp.in the rare colours. The decorative work and painting is almost always exceptionally fine., you can compare it with C19th export Nanking ware made for the US market too, which is sometimes very crude.
Please don't assume that every fitzhugh plate or dish offered for sale is genuine; the fakers can produce anything on the market even if it's not collected by the Chinese.

Here‘s an example of an expensive export porcelain fake: the notorious 1815 dated Fitzhugh plate. A few years ago there were several on the market, offered as authentic. The seller of this one says „probably early turn of the century“. If he means the 21st century he would be right.

Reminds me of my first Chinese porcelain purchase: a large ginger jar decorated in the federal style with American eagle. Turned out to be a 1980s fake. The transfer technology is very good these days.
