Was once again looking at paintings. This one caught my eye for both the story of the picture and the Asian porcelain depicted. Painted by an English fellow, who’s name escapes me.
The story behind it is obvious, a young Victorian recently widowed mother if full morning regalia selling off the house hold treasures to what most likely is an antique dealer. The tea set she is looking to sell looks to be very good quality Chinese export. If you look at the bowl he is holding the painter has demonstrated the quality by depicting his finger showing threw the translucency of the porcelain. Given the dealers mannerism I suspect he is attempting to by the set on the cheap, a look of disappointment on the woman’s face.
there is a fine selection of expensive export ware in the window, all would have been a hundred years old or older when this was painted. In the bottom right corner what looks to be a Ming amphora and top left an Indian elephant deity.
@ronm What makes this picture interesting is not the pots, it is the propaganda. I think Mosley and his buddies would have appreciated the piece. I find it rather heavy handed and disturbing, given modern history. Sharon
Sharon, You are not comfortable with the social statement of the picture, is it the idea of the lack of social net for people who have fallen on hard times or the idea that a woman of the period had to make do with what ever means she has available with the loss of her husband. The situation was very common at the time, and for that matter common in most periods of civilization even in modern times, although in recent times a social safety net is available, at least in Canada.
Birgit, that is a very nice picture as well, looks like the visitor has just left and this is all that remains of a pleasant afternoon tea. The porcelain is well painted and may be relatively new I think judging buy the style. I like the thought of the porcelain being chucked haphazardly into the larger bowl with limited care for chipping the porcelain. A complete tea set now would bring many thousands of dollars now. The tray may have been Japaned and painted by the lady of the house during her idle time.
Sharon, with sounding to ignorant, Whois this Mosley you refer to?
@ronm Oswald Mosley was the head of the Union of British Fascists. It is the obvious, stereotypical, antisemetic portrayal of the grasping Jew in European art with the redundant, exaggerated features taking advantage of the widow and orphan, which is the heavy handed propaganda. Similar works are collected by Halocaust Museums to show the slow progression of hatred which led to the final solution, systematic murder. The concept of "the other," as the source of woe has a sad, long history, it did not suddenly happen. If you own this painting, you should consider donating it. There is a history lesson in that painting. Sharon
Sharon, I have heard of this fellow, only via a couple of BBC documentaries. I had not made the connection on viewing the image that the fellow was a stereotypical characture of a those of the Jewish faith. I am truly sorry if it offends.
the image I thought was a simple. Victorian social comment of the situation the young woman finds her self in. No I do not own the picture, I pulled it off of Pinterest I was looking for inspiration for the the restoration of our Victorian home.
Irregardless of the characture I find the image interesting in the depiction of a Victorian antique shop and the contents within.
once again I am sorry if it has offended, I had no intention to offend.
@ronm I know that you did not have any wish to offend, but be assured the artist had every intention to do so. The history teacher in me came out. I could not stop her. Sharon
P.S. It was only as a former history teacher where I found fault, as far as their rendering of the interior and objects, it was fine, it is unusual that it is not signed and I wandered if their signature is represented on the backside of the painting leaning against the counter, I could not decipher the signature.
Wondered not wandered, no silver alert here (yet).
I tracked down the artist, a fellow named Ralph Hedley. Here is a bit of a biography, he seems to have been a painter and sculptor of some note.
All his paintings seem to be a pleasant to look at, several of his works feature a grieving widow and the exterior of an antique shop. Maybe the same shop?
Ron
