As promised, I thought I'd share my theory, or perhaps better described as my philosophy on how I find Chinese antiques, and how it is very much like bird watching.
In my younger years, I was quite an avid hiker and fairly well educated in Biology. After a 6 month stint living in England outside of Whales, I developed a love of birds which led to a career in aviculture, and eventually I worked and lived in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest before returning to the USA.
For those of you that are not bird watchers, many of you might feel that if you just get yourself a pair of binoculars, bring along a field guide to bird identification, and look long enough, that you can eventually find any bird you care to find, even the rare ones.
Well, this is not true for bird watching, nor is it true for finding Chinese antiques. The truth is that with bird watching and finding Chinese antiques, it is all about looking in the right environment, and dedicating yourself to looking tirelessly for the rarest of the rare.
For example, Humboldt penguins is a common bird that lives along the Pacific shoreline of South America where the water is cold and the shoreline is rocky. It is fair to say that here in my home state of Florida, where the water is warm and beaches are sandy, that short of an escaped penguin from Sea World Orlando, no matter how long I wait, no matter how much I know about Humboldt penguins, and no matter how carefully I look, I am not going to find one walking on the beach.
The same is true for Chinese antiques. You must first understand the environment you are looking before you have any hope of success in finding what you are looking for.
Where do Chinese antiques live? Well, in China of course! But, as with other counties globally, here in the USA, Chinese antiques were introduced in a couple of ways:
A) Export ware came by ship in the 17/18th c. to major ports such as Boston, New York, and Charleston.
B) Private / wealthy travelers in the 19th c. and early 20th c. brought back important Chinese antiques to economically (wealthy) cities like Chicago, Cleveland, St Louis, and others.
C) and in the 1980's when China was open to tourism, many high quality (but significantly more mid to low quality) Chinese antiques entered the general US market, the better quality ending up in more affluent communities (San Francisco / Palm Beach / Hamptons) while the lesser quality spread out more diversely.
So, when thinking about where to look for Chinese antiques, if you consider how they might have originated in your particular area, that can save you from looking for a penguin on Miami Beach. Yes, by some very odd and unlikely chance (or perhaps because of climate change) a penguin might wash up on shore one day. But, your time is not well spent waiting for that day to come.
Yes, Chinese antiques are sometimes found in the most unexpected places... perhaps because the original owner dies and the object is passed along (inherited) from one generation to the next, and by chance the current owner lives outside the normal 'habitat'. In these situations, there is no predictability, but still, wealthy communities generally have better quality Chinese antiques, so paying attention to the wealth of the community (how much are homes selling for in the area) is a helpful clue as to improving your chances of finding a good Chinese antique.

Dear Greeno, it seems that we share some other things besides the love for Chinese ceramics.
I lived in Brazil for a few years, and I ahve a great intrest about nature, birds, plants and animals in general. I practiced photography of Nature for some years, birds, insects, and so on.

@clayandbrush I am really happy to hear we have much in common! I've acquired some great Asian antiques in South America, and once this Covid virus is under better control, I am eager to return. There is nothing I like more than a few weeks in the rainforest, followed by a few weeks traveling the Pacific coast of South America, eating fantastic seafood and shopping at wonderful antique shops!
Perhaps some day we should organize a trip with some members!

Beginners might see seagulls on a Florida beach and think it's a penguin. some seller would even sell a seagull as a penguin. Or fraudulent people might present to beginners fake penguins.
