I'm attempting Jeremy's experiment in reoving peach shape small bowl from glued small under dish today.
2. Ten minutes at 150 degree oven, did nothing. We'll see what 10 minutes at 250 will do.
3. Ten minutes in 250 degree oven did nothing as well, they must have used a super strong bonding agent, these two will live their ceramic lives together. It took me so long to experiment because I had to get sand to place in the bottom of a pie pan to let gravity work as a factor as well. All is not lost, since I will use the sand to hold my broken chinese export cup in place while I do the repair on it and let gravity help with the seal of the glue and milliput.
@sharonp Thanks, Sharon! It's grown on me. In looking at it through a magnifying glass I can see what they mean about the little bubbles; they are inconsistently spaced. I've read that in modern pieces that try to imitate this the bubbles are more even. There are tiny little bits of black here and there as well. (My book on Chinese celadons goes into the chemistry of all of that but doesn't include anything past Ming, sadly.)
I have the broken cup glued back together, so I put the sand away, that was a fun time, after a day or two, I'll start with the Milliput and hopefully not tear it apart in the process. A rubber band around the base and a larger rubber band around the top of the cup is holding it together while the glue dries. If the band sticks to it, then I'll sand off the stuck part when I sand down the dried Milliput.
The cup is complete except for sanding the Milliput, it will never be prominitely displayed again but I was not going to throw it out and the matching saucer is fine, maybe a dark corner of a cabinet. Which reminds me of the time I dropped off a Victorian walnut chest at a cabinetmaker's shop to have an oval molding replaced on one of the drawers and a new top made for the chest and he said, "I have an old marble top that will work, but my son used it for some of his projects." I looked at it, "perfect, more character and it's going in a dark hall." Had a good laugh, problem solved. I later sold it for more than my costs at a moving sale. The kid must have used it for a project involving a punch, little pock marked places on the surface of the typical white with gray veined old marble. Some cleaning and polishing, it was "good enough."
