Hi all:
I wanted to follow up in this thread on my problems with Catawiki (see above posts) since they apply to all of us. To summarize I found a couple of silver items on Catawiki, one of which was a genuine Wang Hing silver presentation cup, through the Catawiki section of bidamount.com. I did a bit of searching and found that the presentation cup was being offered by a seller in the UK as a Buy it Now item on eBay for $5,000 + and on 1stdibs for almost $6,000. The seller's email, telephone and address information were all provided on eBay in the posting for the silver goblet. The Catawiki Asian Art experts had offered sale estimates of about $1,100 to $1,400. The discrepancy struck me as puzzling. It seemed too good to be true and it was! I emailed the purported seller in the UK directly (he is a well-known and reputable silver dealer) and he informed me that the Catawiki sale was "illegitimate." I also wrote to Catawiki but they did not reply to me until today long after the auction was over.
I recall that the winning bid on the auction was about $1,400. I predicted in this forum that the buyer would never see the silver goblet and I was right. In her email to me today, the Catawiki Asian Art expert informed me that someone had "stolen" the photographs of the two silver items from the U.K. dealer's website, had opened a seller's account at Catawiki and had offered the items for auction apparently thinking that he/she would be able to collect the payment before the fraud was discovered.
She further informed me that Catawiki keeps credit card payments on auction items in a type of Escrow account until they have verification that a buyer has received the item at which time they make payment to the seller. This, however, is at variance with the stated policy on the Catawiki website of paying the seller when the item ships. I pointed out in my reply that this still does not offer adequate protection because a fraudulent seller posing as a genuine seller could easily ship an empty container and who would be responsible then?
I did not bid on these items because it was obvious to me that a fraud was being perpetrated. However, some unlucky bidders have paid for the items and I wonder how long it will take them to get their money refunded?
Also, the Asian Art expert told me that they will try to offer prompter responses to question from buyers. I still think that is inadequate because many questions such as those relating to dimensions and possible damage to items can only be answered by the seller.
So I am pleased to have finally discovered what lay behind this messy situation and to have had my claims of fraud validated. I have done what I could do as an individual. However, Peter has a lot more clout than I do and I would hope he will hold Catawiki's feet to the fire if he is going to continue to have a Catawiki section on bidamount.com. Clearly, Catawiki is not screening potential sellers adequately if at all. The two items were allegedly offered by a seller who even I could easily trace to a specific address in the UK because the goblet was so easily found using Google alone. The fraudulent seller had only offered these two items on Catawiki and had no prior auction history with them. Even the most basic screening process should have picked up the fraudulent nature of this auction and that the seller was posing as another person and did not have possession of the items. We really need to know how sellers on Catawiki are being screened before we can bid there with any confidence. We also need the same protections offered by eBay and PayPal namely one's money back if one does not receive an item or if the item is an obvious fake.
I would be interested to learn what other forum members think about this situation.
