I was just thinking... If this dish is only worth $100 or so, why did so many accounts (people) bid so much?
If this is a scam (which I assume it is), a lot of effort and people have been involved... Or is this all the work of the seller and his friend's / family's eBay accounts?
The bidding was at £920.00 GBP four days before the end of the auction.

I'm afraid that in the business of Chinese porcelains, the buyers are rarely on the winning side. The sellers of modern replicas of antique items who misrepresent them as antiques, aided and abetted by eBay and its policies, almost always prevail. Of course, we do not know how much the best offer was in this case.However, one has to assume that if the item was listed as a "Buy it Now" item for about $9,500 (USD) that the seller would not have accepted anything less than about $6,000. Even then the profit is huge. One has to wonder also what sort of person would spend such a high amount on a 4.5-inch bowl of dubious age and period without consulting someone with expertise before doing that. The other possiblity is that all of us on the Forum were wrong and this coral bowl was what it was presented as. However, I very much doubt that. Even if this were a late Qing or early Republican period bowl, as in the seller's description of it, even $800 would have been a high cost for it as Giovanni pointed out to me.

I have read and heard on quite a few occasions, that people with little to no knowledge of Asian arts are simply carried along with the momentum of interest (scams) and are buying items as 'investments' for their children. Their children probably do not know how much their parents have spent and therefore these frauds are never picked up. This has probably gone on since the dawn of time and ebay is just the latest in a long line of vehicles for tricksters to operate. Which is why, the work Peter and his crew undertake, to educate the masses (who want to learn) on the subject of Asian art is so important.
Massive "Thank you" to Peter and all the people behind the scenes who bring us such informative content.
I most definitely agree. Peter seems to be the sole source of sanity and good advice is the perilous field of Chinese and other Asian art.
