I think there is a bit of shadyness going on here. Bidder U seems to have jumped himself to a crazy number, and bidder Y just matched it plus a little extra. I highly dought any money will change hands on this auction.

This is a scheme to create a false sale record for the dish. Totally dishonest seller creating multiple accounts and bid on the same item they are selling. Look up GWS Auction house based in California. They create fake sale records like this kn Liveauctioneers and ebay and the like...
Hi Lewis and Huey:
Thanks for providing me with some entertainment on a quiet evening! This is amazing. Firstly, I very much doubt that this bowl is a Jiaqing item. The stiff appearance of the bats suggests a contemporary replica. Certainly, it is worth nowhere near 51,000 GBP.
I was interested in Huey's hypothesis. I think this is truly an example of shill bidding with the seller either having multiple accounts and therefore bidding against himself or getting friends to do that to increase the selling price whatever the motivation.
I think I have been a victim of shill bidding on eBay on a couple of occasions. The sequence of events was as follows: I would bid on an item that has reached $500 in bids, for example, ten minutes before the auction closed. If it's an item I liked I might then put in a maximum bid of $1,100 hoping to win the item but expecting to get it at about $700. Then suddenly in the last three seconds a bid from someone with no eBay record whatsoever comes in at $1,000 and I end up paying more for the item than it was worth. Obviously, the last bid may be a true snipe bid from a genuine buyer who wants to get the piece.
However, I suspect that more usually it is a shill bidder. The latter hopes to come in just below my maximum bid and therefore make me pay more than the item is worth. Obviously, the shill bidder has no way of knowing what my maximum bid is. However, if the shill bid is higher than mine, the bidder simply does not pay for the item and the item appears at a later auction. To add insult to injury I have on a couple of occasions then been contacted by the seller after the auction offering me the item at my maximum bid because the top bidder did not pay. I did indeed once buy a wonderful Republican vase in this way. However, I told the seller I would only buy the vase at $400 lower than my maximum bid. The rapidity with which this offer was accepted tended to confirm my suspicion that shill bidding was involved.
Huey there is one seller whose items appear on bidamount.com (who I won't name) but whom you have identified as a shady seller who I think does that.
Am I the only victim of this kind of thing or has anyone else experienced it?
Regards,
Errol
The seller has relisted the bowl for a buy it now price for GBP 7500. After he attributed a false value on the item by shill bidding, some stupid might now think he can make a bargain. This is incredible. I hope no one falls into the trap.
Birgit
Hi All,
Could someone tell me what a bowl of this type that was 100% legitimate with a proven history would be worth,
Thanks
Michael
Hello Michael:
The bowl is now being sold as a "Buy It Now" item and the seller describes it as late Qing or Early Republican in period. It measures about 4-1/2 inches.
If it were early Republican, my guess is that it would sell on an eBay auction in the range of 800 - 1,200 USD.
Regards,
Errol
Funny story. This small plate doesn't have the proper quality of imperial kiln.

Hi Errol,
I have experienced being outbid by usernames with 0 ratings. I also think it is the seller who created these accounts to inflat the final sale prices. There is no way for me to confirm with certainty though... So whenever I see an item whose bids are hidden (bidders displayed as “private”), I walk away. Anyway, sad reality for sure when a true “auction” is indeed a price-fixing scheme.
Dear Erroll, 800 US$? I am sure that if I were selling that really average quality bowl, with an hairline as it have, I would reach 100 US$ if I were lucky. Most probably will not sell because of the shipping cost.
Giovanni
Dear Giovanni:
Thank you for taking me to task and injecting a note of realism. I'm not suggesting that that is what the bowl is worth even if late Qing. I have seen several bowls of this type and size sell on eBay for that kind of price especially when they are offered by some of the more prolific eBay auctioneers. You obviously have more expertise and experience than I do. However, I can only go by what i see and what I have sometimes paid personally.
Reading the forums today has been a depressing experience. One has to wonder why we persist in being involved. I suppose the answer is that those of us who love Chinese art are addicts of a sort and we cannot kick the habit of buying even though we know it is not good for us.
All good wishes!
Errol
Well it appears this scam actually worked! - Some unfortunate sole has snapped up a bargain... ?
